Gopro sound, where to place the mic?

I recently got a gopro 8 with an external mic and have been messing around with mic location to reduce, or eliminate wind noise and get some of that tasty s65 exhaust note. When i put the mic anywhere in the cabin the wind noise still dominates, but i don't have a dead cat on the mic to muffle wind. A lot of the track videos posted here have good sound so was curious what people are using. I was thinking of running the mic into the trunk. TIA.

Tape it to the rear bumper, right below the license plate. Make sure it has one of those big fuzzy wind reducing things on it (I usually buy a pack of 10 since they tend to get grimy or fall off).

Does yours work? I have a GoPro 8 Black and cannot for the life of me get any external mic to work with it. I have tried and returned three different lapel-type wired ones off Amazon with no luck getting them to work.
Best place to put it though is if mounting the camera on the side of the car or inside the car through the back seats and out the trunk just below or taped to the license plate.

For the 8, I believe you have to buy that $80 MediaMod thing. It's why a slightly older camera with the USB-3.5mm adapter is preferable.

The USB-C mic adapter for the Hero 5/6/7 works for the Hero 8. It is $50 so many just buy the media mod for $80 to get the additional mics and other features.

Coming from a Hero 6, the Hero 8's built in mics are much better already. I haven't had reason to use the mic adapter.

Thought about this as the cheaper alternative to the media mod but then realized the problem is it's so bulky its not going to play nicely without buying a $30 case to hold the clunky part of it, which puts the pricing of the two about equal...
I just want to put my camera on my rear window and run a $10 lapel mic and get sound without wind noise and/or the case rattling...
Enjoy a nice video of lots of wind noise and me taking out alll the finish cones as an example:

I’ve had good luck with my microphone placement: inside the rear tow hook hole. I installed a tow hook and then wrapped the mic wire around the hook and place the mic inside The hole. I’ve always been happy with the sound there. You don’t get any wind. And you don’t have to look at a microphone taped to the bumper in all your track pix. You can run the wire out the trunk. Or you can internally route it from the trunk and not see any wires.

Get a fuzzy sock and sort of pinch it between the trunk and bumper.

Mine is also taped to the bumper.

I'm using a AT-3350 mic but I want to switch to something that doesn't have it's own battery power.

Mine's in the trunk. I have a proper mike and use the USB-C adapter with my gopro 8/7/6
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It sounds wonderful. Next track season I'm going to put the mike in the engine bay of the E90 to see if I can capture the heavenly music from the Karbonius+cams combo

On the F80 CS I keep the mike in the engine bay. Anywhere else, even on the tow hook and an inch from the exhaust just sounds like shit. In the engine bay at least you hear the engine doing stuff

Microphone on the rear bumper sounds just fine, and reminds you that the S65's stock exhaust has a great tone:

How do you guys get steady videos? Is this a feature on the GoPro itself or just very good mounting points on the inside?
I have gopro5, I think it doesn't have stabilization

RAM Brand Mounts are the best. Only kind I'll use and holds the camera really steady

I used one of these. It clamps to the headrest posts which is extremely stable -- you effectively have the weight of the seat plus your own body weight to damp vibrations. That video is on an old-ass GoPro 3+ which definitely does not have stabilization.

Suction cups on glass and paint are a crapshoot, if the body panel or glass vibrates (likely), the video will look horrible.

I've actually switched to this one on my harness bar which has also been mostly vibration-free save for a few weird exit curbs.

Do you happen to be running a mic with a SmartyCam? I just caved and bought one today off eBay for a decent deal and am debating on which cable to buy with it and to do an external mic with it or not. Looks like there is an option for a pre-wired mic or a microphone jack into the SmartyCam and not sure which way I want to go with it.

I got a friend's smartycam video and my God, it's like it's 1995 all over again.

I really like AIM products but the Smartycam, what the fuck, 180x180 resolution or some crap. Horrible

I use ram mounts but also use gopro with stabilization

The quality difference between a gopro5 and a gopro7 is so massive that I don't want to watch my videos from the 5.
I upgrade every year so now I'm using the 8 and next season the 9.

I record at 4k60 and it makes videos so nice and smooth
