2008 E90 Blown Engine

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
Sold

Item Interest
I'm in NorCal, selling my '08 E90 M3 6MT. 67,XXX
Car has clean title and is stock except for modified exhaust. Rod bearings, throttle body actuators, and idle control valve had been replaced.

Exterior is in really good condition. Jerez Black. Garaged so paint is still vibrant except for 1-2 chips on hood from road rash. Some minor curb rash on front wheels. Interior is clean with dark grey/black and carbon fiber interior. No wear or rips in seats, carpet, etc, with only some wear on top of steering wheel. Car has all the options packages, cold weather, premium, technology, moon roof, rear sunshade, etc.

Blown motor. Car is at a Dinan shop right now with the motor on a stand with teardown to start this week. I was hoping the motor was salvageable, but that's not the case. Once they removed the intake and exposed the valley of the engine there were piston pieces everywhere, and the cylinder head was toast, hole in the upper oil pan as well.

If this sounds like an ideal candidate for your project, PM me an offer. Recent photos of car here (pardon the dust from the shop): https://photos.app.goo.gl/q64L3oy7JY7w4RJs5

*Link works now!*

*Blown motor update. Not related to the rod bearings at all. Suffered a dropped valve from either broken valve spring, failed lifter or both. Valve met piston and pulverized each other. Motor not salvageable at all. They chalked it up to a fluke and terribly luck. Engine and transmission have been removed, and car is looking for a new home!

*Price drop. Roller is ready to be loaded on a truck and sent out. I'm in NorCal in the Bay Area, and will tow it for free up to 200 miles.*

You would have had no trouble getting the $15k before the motor blew. If the replaced rod bearings were in bad shape, maybe they contributed to main bearings failure. Or maybe your motor was destined to suffer main bearings failure no matter what. It’s much less common but still disastrous for those who suffer it out of warranty.

Would be awesome to know what actually failed. What bearings were installed?

I had preemptively swapped the OEM bearings with WPC bearings. Will keep you posted on cause of the boom.

Sorry to hear. Was bearings replaced by a reputable shop that’s done many of these?

Done by a highly recommended speciality shop. We’ll see with the tear down if it was just coincidence or whether something went awry with rod bearing job.

Update- Wasn't the rod bearings at all. Either a broken valve spring or failed lifter or both, leading to a dropped valve.

Valve met piston, and an unstoppable force met an immovable object. Block destroyed, head destroyed, engine totally shot.

I feel your pain!!! I had the same issue on my 09 M3. with 75k miles. Loose valve dropped into cylinder# 8. I end up writing a letter to BMW since it was my second M engine failure. They provided a new engine at discount cost at $10k and end up putting a NEW engine for $17K including labor.

It was more expensive but i did not want to deal with bearings, engine top covers, valves, water pump later on.
