Not necessary.
Keep stock configuration if you are track beginner or wants most forgiving handling at the limit.

Once you are messing with tire size and suspension, you are also messing with vehicle dynamics.
From what I feel, you might want to try with stock set up and make improvements from there.

Most people on track make mistake on relaying too much on "hardware" than their driving skill.
Dont forget stock car is easiest way to learn how to "drive".

If you dropped down to 12mm spacers in the front & 10mm spacers in the rear, you would avoid rubbing issues with these upgraded tire sizes:

265/35/18 front
275/40/18 rear

With this tire combo, you will improve the front grip, and get a more neutral handling car in the process.
This is (almost) the setup I use on the track. I have 265/35 18F, 275/35 18R Toyo R888's on stock rims with 10mm spacers all around and it works great. I highly recommend getting a dedicated set of wheels/tires if you plan on tracking / autocrossing the car more than a few times a year and still drive it on the street in between.

If you need new summer tires on OEM tires get the RE-11's, they make the exact OEM tire sizes.

yes 285/30/20 is what I was referring to

My bad. I assumed he was going to use the same aspect ratio for all the different sizes.

I have and I LOVED them. Quiet, long lasting, not the grip of the ulta high end tires but very good nonetheless.

thanks. from what I've been reading they are below PS2 perfromance but I can get the 4 brand new for 700€ for 20' wheels, while the PS2's would go for around 1500€!!!...I think the considerable price difference is worth it, especially because I don't track the M

Guys,
I am looking to replace my PS2s with something new. I am bone stock on 19". Should I go for a new set of PS2s, PS3s or what?

I do occasional track days (I 've been to a couple only), and otherwise city, highway driving and road trips. Most of the time temperature is arround 18-23 degrees Celcius here.

What would you recon? I want good grip (road quality is really shitty here so the tyre has to be grippy), and relatively good performance on wet road as well.

Also, shall I go 285 at the back for extra grip to compensate for the slipery road surface?

w.r.t tires, check out the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas, they get great reviews and they are well priced. I have a set on order, so I can't comment from personal experience but all I read was enough to get me to order some.

In my experience though the PS2's while pretty good, don't take the abuse of track/autox very well. Mine chunked and cupped severly. I'm getting approx 7K mles per set. The Ultracs have a 280 wear rating vs 220 on PS2's.

Agreed. Mine came with Contis and I already know I'm not going to go with something that high performance. I might make a run or two on the Ring while I'm here but I doubt I'll ever get into track driving. If I do I'll pick up a set of lightweight 18s and some R-compounds.

I don't think a shitty road is going to be made better with a tire with more grip.

If you're really between 18 and 23 degrees then your options are pretty open as far as tires go. I value life and noise over all-out performance so you need to rate what you want out of a tire before you can really start looking.

The wider tires will help with dry grip but can make hydroplaning easier unless it's a bad ass wet weather tire.

Try the Tire Rack reviews and tests to start with and see what fits your needs.

I agree. If you are a newby to the track you should not mess with the car until you can do 10 laps in a row within a one second window (lap times). Until then you are not consistent enough to appreciate the changes.

How do the RE-11 work in the rain?

I just had a track day in the wet with PS2 and they blew my mind. I am thinking of changing to something less expensive, but perhaps not at the expense of having bad rain performance...

FWIW, I have Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric tires on my M3. Unfortunately, it came this way so I can't really tell how they compare with the PS2 or any other tires on the M3. However, they have been rated as being every bit as good, if not better than the PS2 in the wet. I can vouch for that. They do seem to have plenty of grip and stopping power in the rain.

Cheers.

Updated: Thanks for the catch on my incomplete thought, adc.

I ran the RE-11s on my E36 M3 with a slightly more aggressive suspension/alignment setup, and now have PS2s on the E92 M3. So, aside from being different vehicles, I feel that the wet performance on the PS2s is superior to the RE-11s. I always drive more conservatively in wet conditions, and in doing so, I've found the RE-11s to perform adequately. So I guess the PS2s are better in the rain if you're some combination of: like to track in the rain or want the extra security.

Beyond that, The PS2s are almost as sticky as the RE-11s in dry performance, but the RE-11s blow them out of the water in sidewall stability. I'm really looking forward to dumping the PS2s.

I think this sentence may be missing a couple of words?

Thanks for the review...

I'll have to say RE-11's as well. Awesome tire. I just picked up some of the new Continental Extreme Contacts and they are really good too, they cost less and weigh less than other tires of the same class.
