This seems to be the best answer if engine is already apart. I'm getting this for the new motor.

New motor should address all failure points by ranking:
1. BE Rod Bearings and Bolts (address rod bearing clearance)
2. Main Bearings (address mains failure)
3. Supertech performance valves and valve springs (address dropped valves and spring failure)
4. MPorium machined hardened steel vanos caps that doesn't require washers (address cracked plastic vanos covers) - If you're not building your heads like mine, the Slon or M Power solutions will work as they're snap on.

For the Mporium or Carbahn bolted options, you will need to replace the following:
4qty 11367840998 - central stretch bolts
4qty 11367839292 - o-rings
2qty 11317507432 - tensioner crush washers

What else am I missing that could blow my motor up on the track. My chassis endured 2 blown / seized motor. Can't afford to take any risk!

Carbahn washers work too. But something doesn't feel right about spending $100 on hardware store washers. I'm a machined car parts nerd.

Just came into my mind. Did you replace the injectors? If they fail, you lose your engine, and new injectors never failed. S65 old injectors sometimes fail here and there.

Failed injectors won't blow your motor. You'll get misfire and runs rough, unless you know something I don't.

You can always send the injectors out to be cleaned and tested. We have ported injectors, failure rate is low.

edit: apparently it does ruin the motor when it stays open, hydrolock

I think you're right on that but we both may be wrong. Associated with another error, I lost my engine due to stuck open injector. (and there are many other owners too)

My error, I believe, was trying, several times, to re-start the engine, after the emergency mode was activated, before knowing my injector was stuck open, until the engine locked up in a certain attempt.

But that's not the focus in this thread. I just wanted to say it was a cheap preventive maintenance, cuz you asked.

Unfortunately injector stuck open causing hydrolock seems to be a failure mode that's appearing more and more as our cars age.

gawd damn. This motor has so many flaws, lol. Why don't BMW just let Toyota help them design parts that won't fall apart? Oh wait, that's the B58.

I think he was referring that failed injectors won't kill your engine. Having an injector fail open will flood the engine and brake it, while having an injector not fire will run the engine lean and kill it. In either case, a failed injector will kill the motor.

Roughly speaking how much should labor and parts be for 2/3/4 ?

Main bearings, head service, and vanos covers would be done all at once. Main bearings require separating the block/bedplate, while at it heads can come off, once heads off the vanos covers can be replaced/retimed.

Parts/labor, you're looking at $7,500-10k.

Valves = $1,050
Valve Springs = $720
Valve Job = $450
MPorium Vanos Cover = $398
Main Bearings = $650
(you would do rod bearings while at it)
Gaskets and replace stretched bolts = $1,500
Other labor = $4,000-$5500

Other parts you'll might as well replace. GRAF water pump (blades are metal, not plastic), thermostat, injectors, breather valve.

If you want to spend even more, then send the engine out to Carbahn for a full rebuild with 4.2. That's $18k + swap labor. They offer 2yr unlimited mileage warranty, track or not. That would be the route I would've taken if my motor wasn't seized.

If I wasn't addicted to the sound of the motor and this chassis on the track, I would've given up. But this is the last NA M car, I had to fix it and make it better.
