E92 manual M3 vs E63 M6 DCT

*EDIT* - yes, yes, I know the M6 has an SMGIII...was thinking about the e9x M's while posting this thread.

Hey all - thinking of getting back into a e92 M3, 6spd. Reason being is that although I love my F10 M5, and it's stupid fast, I miss that connected, visceral feeling that a smaller coupe provides. In my search for an e92, I've come across the e63 M6...you know, the v10 S85 that will likely financially ruin everyone? So I'm considering that era M6 because the price point is so low. Yes, I know they're expensive to maintain but you can find a well cared for (RB's, TA's, and vanos lines NOT done for this price point) for about $10-15k. It's almost too good to pass up, especially for a car that won't be a DD for me.

Anyway, my question(s) center more around driving dynamics, feel, fun-factor, etc. I know as current or previous e9x owners, we're all biased towards that platform but I'm thinking an M6 may "fit" the experience I'm looking for out of my next car. I love My F10 M5 (DCT) but it's just not as fun on back roads as my e90 M3 was, obviously due to weight and a number of other factors. So with that said, what do you guys think about the e63 M6 w/ a SMG? I know maintenance won't be cheap but it might be worth getting into, at the right price.

Thoughts?

Personally I can't get passed the aesthetics of an e63. It's a car which hasn't aged well in the style department but it could be fun at the right price, if something catastrophic happens you can scrap it.

The V10 is not that much worse than the V8 in maintenance. I drive a 6mt V10 every now and then and it's incredible

The M6 couple also doesn't weigh much more than the E92.

It's a really epic experience. I say do it!

After 2008 they come with the new vanos line, although all the old ones were changed as well. Do rod bearings like you would with any S65 and you're pretty much good to go

I hear ya on the aesthetics. Love the CF roof, love the coupe lines..but that rear end...still hasn't grown on me.

That's my thinking as well about a major failure. Honestly, not sure I'd even scrap it or just sit on it in the garage until I can get it fixed. Who knows.

I think it's 160lbs more than an e92??? it's minimal, which I was surprised to learn. I've never actually driven an M6 so I guess that's next on the test drive list. It's just crazy to me that you can own a V10 coupe w/ a CF roof and an ///M badge for so cheap (relatively) these days.

Yes, very close in weight. The V10 is significantly more powerful than the S65, it's not like a small difference you can make up with test pipes and a tune

I have right of first refusal on two 6mt E60 M5s

Someone selling them? I'd consider an E60 if it were 6MT, unfortunately, then tend to go for a bit more than I'm looking to pay. PM me details if you don't mind. Thanks!

I’d be tempted by an S85 car. They are more complex but also more special.

No, if they were selling I'd have one in the garage already! Hehehe

The F12 sounds like crap and completely missed out on the V10 awesomeness

The only good thing I find in the newer turbo engines is they are faster at the track, but the M6 is not going to the track, so then it's pretty pointless

(And yes, I've driven the M5c extensively, it does nothing to change my mind)

The sound is exactly what's missing from my F10 M5. It just sounds like poo. Can't help it, and may sound better w/ an exhaust but still doesn't compare to an S65/85 car.

Would rather have the E60 M5 over the ugly E63... either way though, if you want the connected visceral feeling then you're looking at the wrong cars. E46 M3 is the one you want

2010 E63 M6 6MT would be my ideal purchase. Hopefully I get to find one in black.

M6 SMG vert

F the haters

It is the only four place V10 convertible ever made

The SMG is awesome. Dumb and annoying sometimes, but awesome. You can hammer truly brutal shifts and take no blame for it whatsoever because it’s happening by design! What’s not to love!

Vert so you can hear it

Buy

Now

The coupe feels bigger and heavier than the e92 because it is. The front wheel and tire package is big and squishy on a relatively narrow rim, and it shows up in the steering. It also doesn’t feel all that much faster until you reach about 60mph, and feels slower at low rpm despite the displacement advantage because the power delivery isn’t as flexible. So get a vert, drop the top, and care not

I’ve driven a couple E60M’s now and they’re great but the extra weight, size, and softness of the suspension tune is really really obvious. The e63M is much more GT than the E60, which leans too far toward cushy for my tastes, awesome though it is, and the smaller cabin just makes the e63 feel...smaller and easier to handle and place in a corner

E63M 4eva

I had an 08 E90 manual and 11 E92 ZCP DCT. Plus 08 M6 SMG with race exhaust.

The M3 is more engaging of a drive, for sure. So from your original post M3 wins there. However the M3 isn't a 911 either, its a bit heavy and porky at times.

However the S85 is an animal, not only the power but the sound. Nothing like it. However its more of a GT blaster than canyon carver. And not aging well.

I enjoyed driving them both on back roads, as you can wind them both out pretty good for epic sounds.

I'm biased towards smaller, sportier cars. So probably take the M3 in your case, plus you can find a manual or DCT M3 pretty easy which is more reliable. M6 can be scary expensive to own. good luck
