Technically, this would be a compact sedan in the same class as the Corolla, Civic, Sentra, Mazda3, Impreza, Elantra, Forte, Jetta, etc.

Of course, since this is from a premium brand, as you suggest, it's not really meant to be a competitor to those vehicles. It's clear rivals are the Audi A3/S3, Mercedes CLA/CLA35, and the Acura ILX.

The Focus RS was a hatchback, and is no longer available (anywhere in the world). The Civic Type R is also a hatchback. The WRX pair do meet the criteria though, yes.

But as noted above, they are not strictly competitors since they are not premium vehicles per se. Their higher MSRP is accounted for by being special high performance versions of what is essentially a garden variety compact sedan (the Impreza). Although they don't share with the current generation Impreza, that is only because they have been on the market so long without a clean-sheet redesign.

Let's see now:

- No Hoffmeister
- No kidneys (that's one solid lump of grille)
- Headlights considerably higher placed than front wheel wells

This is about as un-BMW a BMW as I've ever seen, Isetta and 5GT included.

I get why BMW went FWD and I can understand the reasoning behind some of the changes they're making, but I see absolutely no point in going for a Golf-sized, Golf-packaged BMW, when there is such a thing as... well... a Golf.

Agreed. If my F80 was the same size of my lady's M2, we would have a perfect garage.

Sad to say, but that’s indeed it.

It looks nothing like a BMW. Really nothing at all.

I think this looks great and is perfect for the customer that's in the market for this type of car from BMW. Interestingly, to me, the rear ie tail lights and shape, would work really well on the X4 or X6. My only gripe is the hood cut line, too bad you can't get rid of it.

Surprised it took 3 pages of comments until this was said. I always laugh when I see this. 99% of vehicles don't appreciate in value. That will be the case here, no matter how ugly the new 2'er is. As others have said, there's tons of people on a budget who'd love to have the BMW badge on their next car and could care less about anything else.

S3's a good looking car, right proportions, and nice simple but sharp lines, if I was going FWD, I'd probably take a good look at one vs the 2GC. Also a new generation is coming soon, although based on the leaks, the hatch's great design has been butchered to look like a small Q3/5, so the sedan might lose its good design soon.

I would say it would rival the A Class sedan but not the 2020 CLA.

We need this car bad!!! I am excited about it. I wish they would have used the 1 Series designation instead.

I'm not sure if your post is a bigger insult to BMW or this vehicle's future owners. When you insinuate that people will only purchase because of the brand, it's an tacit acknowledgement that you don't find any value in BMW's products. Otherwise you'd be able to identify how this vehicle is superior to its competition. Surely you agree this is a better car than a Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, etc.; no?
No this is not better. This is a BMW corolla. As has been mentioned by numerous posters. I'll leave it at that as I'll get mods pissed at me if I go further.

I'm at the tail end of my relationship with BMW at this point. Sad.

Driving a loaner Audi Q7 right now as I'm away on business. The wife and I both think it's a better product then what BMW is offering in this category. After 16 years with BMW our next cars will most likely be an Audi or Merc. Plus with Merc we can still do European Delivery

FWD BMWs shouldn't exist. Period
