How do you know that? And do you honestly believe it will be lighter than the M3? |

wow, this is really sad
I can't friggin believe this. I actually had to register to explain the reason for added weight generation after generation. Remember when the E30 M3 was first introduced. It was a homologation special that was lightweight and truly featured racing components such as suspension and engine technology. From what one person is saying in this thread, they believe that the e92 m3 should weigh as much as the e30 m3... (I made a stretch to show better the difference between generations). With each generation, electronics, luxury, and size increases. Why? Because there is demand for it. Do not forget the added weight of safety features. Suspension parts are beefed up for better handling and ride at the cost of added weight. All weather tires and run flats will add weight. The e92 is larger than the e46. FACT.
"Wheelbase is up by 1.4 inches; length is 2.2 in. greater; width is up by fully 3 in.; and the new models are 0.8 in. taller. These increases in exterior dimensions translate into enhanced luxury and comfort equipment, and greater passenger and cargo space: Shoulder room, front head room, rear knee room, and EPA passenger compartment and trunk volumes are all up, as shown in the table below. Yet there's not a hint of the 3 Series abandoning its tradition of compact exterior dimensions; and despite extensive new content, weight is up by less than 100 lb" (http://www.autospectator.com/modules...hp?storyid=825). Interior volume IS up and cannot be said to be negligible, so is trunk space. I can go on and on, but this post is gigantic, i'll continue later if i have to. Please understand that I agree, I wish each following generation is lighter and more powerful and more enjoyable to drive (the last two are what the e92 m3 is). But I can also understand that there is a marketing niche for a model that goes in between hard-core racer and 335i luxury with very decent power. The E92 M3 CSL, if or when it comes will take on the E30 M3 or the 3.0 CSL's racing heritage. |

Fanboys are annoying whether Audi or BMW, and frankly a waste of my time. Agreed, BMW brakes have traditionally been, as EVO magazine says, "a blind spot" Though we'll have to wait and see about the new cross-drilled rotor, floating, aluminium composite caliper ones on the M3, and not jump to conclusions. Presenting preliminary results of a single test as irrefutable fact is hyperbolic and not analytical.
As far as weight is concerned. Nose-heavy Audi's in general and RS4 in specific have nothing on BMW's and the E92 M3 in this regard. The brochure is accurate on this count. Though it is correct and salient to point out the near 200lb increase in this e92 model. Each successive M3 model has been larger and heavier than the previous version, just as each 3 series has been larger and heaver. The M3 will always be based on its 3 series coupe progenitor, so it has no real choice, does it? Each heavier generation has been criticized as going in the wrong direction in terms of weight and length, but I ask, what happens at the end of the day, when all reviewers and the general public have their chance to thoroughly consider the new model? Well, precious few would argue that the e36 M3 was a better car then the e46. This may not continue with the e92, but the lesson here is that weight alone does not a worse car make. The carbon roof saves some weight, was it 7 or 22lbs? The principle is correct, though it does seem to be a small savings for what must be big bucks. Anyone that has ordered an M3 w/o sunroof has acted on the same principle. Motosport is merely doing whatever they can to take a e92 package and improve upon it. Speaking of positioning, the M3 will always be positioned as a luxury car that also has ferocious performance. It has never and never will attempt to become a Lotus Exige. That it is even compared with a 911 is not, in my mind, a strict apples-to-apples comparision, but it is informative to do so. I would not expect the M3 to outperfom (in all senses) the 400 lb lighter, much smaller 911, but if it gets close then the substantial real-world benefits of the M3 (trunk, rear passenger ******* get more important. My $0.02.

correct
I was thinking it but didn't type it for some reason. The M cars are limited by the series (3, 5, 6) they are based on. They take on essentially the same dimensions and general styling. They won't make a M3 with smaller dimensions because then it wouldn't be a e92 any more (or a e90 anymore, which is coming). They want to make the series's dimensions consistent because it allows the consumer to see a product progression and make choice easier. Also, the costs of r&d are distributed throughout a series rather than for a particular model.

I wondered that too. It's amazing that the smallest car in BMW's range is gonna get 6 piston brakes :rocks:

you guys are hilarious....lmao....and btw, to russian dude: even though the M3 got heavier, it got 90 more hp. this made it have a higher hp/kg ratio than the old M3. so stop criticizing BMW. They are much smarter than u and all of us so they know what they are doing.
