Yet another case of DSC malfunction, reduced power, increased emissions!
Well, after a few searches and reading, it seems this a common problem with e9x M3s.
Mine being a 08 w/ 69k miles and FBO + tune Now this problem used to happen years ago when I was stock but it came back only recently. I wanted to add I also have increased battery discharge, and I heard that could be part of the problem as well as the throttle actuators. I wanted to add that this only happens if I drive the car a LITTLE aggressively if not warmed up fully, like the oil temp being at 210. Even a slight rev match/ down shift will cause the car to go into limp mode. Which brings the RPMs to 4k and I have to pull over on the freeway when this happens to shut off the car and turn it back on. Now I don't have any code readers, but I did once replace a faulty sensor under the hood that caused increased emmsions to come on even though my tune takes away the catless part. And I did retune it when the sign came back on, but a week later, it came back on. I'm at a lost; I don't know if this is my battery (which hasn't been replaced since 08) or if it is that throttle problem, or both! If so, and someone has had prior experience, any info is greatly appreciated and if you know how much this might cost me. I hope this is the only problem and nothing serious, because if it is, I might as well say goodbye to the last of the N/A motor and have to go F/I. But that is last resort! I love the S65 too much to let it go. Do I need to get the codes read to get a proper answer? Here are the pics that pop up before I have to turn it off and back on and then warm up A LONG time before I can even down shift properly. Last edited by stealthM3; 02-04-2016 at 11:30 PM.. |

This is when I had to replace my throttle actuator:

Looks like the dealer reset / updated your software. Is that necessary? If so I have to re-tune, again... And looks like once u got your throttle actuator replaced all seemed fine, may I ask how much those roughly cost? Without warranty? And the dealer should have those readers right? Without having to update I hope Thanks man |

For me, including labor, it was around $2K CAD which was paid by warranty. Everything is fine after they replaced my throttle actuators (both were replaced).

Have someone scan your codes. Don't even waste your time with anything else until you do that. I am 90% sure it is your throttle actuator(s). If the codes come back with cyl misfires on one (or both) sides, it's your TA 100%

Pull the codes first and then start to worry.

Many times, when DTCs are registered in the ECM/PCM, DSC or any other traction control system will disengage itself due to the fact that ignition is cut to correct wheel spin, etc.
It is easy to get distracted by the many lights that will pop up during the time that DTCs are set, but its key to remember that many times, it is related to the same simple issue. Invest in a simple code reader (many out there), and use it to get a better idea of what is going on. Remember, DTCs and their descriptions are not always whats wrong, but rather where the system is seeing the error. To answer your other question, our cars (all cars in general) rely on a constant voltage for sensors to read correctly. So yes, low voltage (read: old battery) can cause faults with many systems. Typically, if it gets low enough voltage, there will be an enormous amount of lights, and serious running issues. Check it, report back, pray to your God of choice. -Tyler |
