Sainz's time penalty and later addition of 2 penalty points has made him angry but hitting someone (ALO) is a serious act though it's only his first points to blot his record.
It could have happened to Max from HAM at the start but for a sixth sense from Max doing a quick avoidance saved a collision.

A 'younger Max' would not have yielded: contact/crash - damage - risk of DNF - risk of time penalty and new penalty points on his license.

Max matured: he kept his cool, looked at the bigger picture, decided to resist the urge to almost certainly make contact, which would likely have damaged his car, and trusted that he was capable with his RB19 and his skills to overtake Hamilton at a later stage of the race.

And he did: Max patiently clawed back to P1 and left Melbourne with two things:

• the race victory;
• a precedent for 2023 that dive-bombing combined with pushing a competitor off track despite not reaching the apex ahead of a competitor, apparently gets a pass from FIA race directors; rest assured that Max *will* do that too during a later race and legitimize his action by saying something along the lines: "Hamilton was allowed to do such pass in Melbourne, so I am allowed to do that too".

During the Melbourne race today, the Belgian F1 TV journalist Gaëtan Vigneron (who travels along with the whole F1 circus and is usually very well-informed) repeated to have "heard" that, despite keeping up cordial appearances on social media and during press events, the relationship between Max and Checo is broken beyond repair ("fini") since the Monaco 2022 accident. He added that Ricciardo is on the prowl to replace Checo, that Ricciardo is performing very well with the RB19 and that he has preserved his bromance with Max. The journalist added that bold statements made by Checo this race weekend in Melbourne, will only deepen the hostile divide between "the Verstappen clan and the Perez clan".

Mark my words: Checo's Red Bull Racing contract will *not* be extended - someone else will be Verstappen's team mate in 2024. Ever since Verstappen found out what Checo had done during Q3 of the Monaco 2022 qualies, Checo is just somebody that Max used to know. Checo demoted himself from 'team mate' to 'team member' - It's over.

On the one side indeed what happened between SAI and ALO at the restart should be punished, but I wonder how many other crashes in this race were "someones' fault and didn't get punished.
I wonder if both the time penalty and the 2 points were necessary.

PER was forced off by one of the alpines, and I think SAR crashed into DEV, and then one of the alpines crashed into the other (I think GAS into OCO).
All crashes where one went into the other.


BTW...after 3 races Max is already 63 points ahead of LEC. What a dramatic season he has....

A few talking points from the race:

1. Hamilton creeping in the formation lap was criminal. It led to a very dangerous situation with some of the cars coming to a standstill whilst others approaching full throttle.
2. Leclerc's career has hit rock bottom. The Ferrari is obviously worse than last year and Charly is making too many rookie mistakes.
3. The driver pairing of Ocon and Gasly is an accident waiting to happen. In fact today we had the first big one. Surely not the last.

I think Kmag fully agrees. He had to go through the gravelpit to evade the traffic jam. Everyone came to a standstill just after a blind corner as a result of hammy's tactical games.
That could have been a very serious crash.
