which is the max oil reading on dipstick

New car and this car has a dipstick im not used to. Is the the notch to the right the full reading? or is it the little dot on the right?

The notch. If the car is any new indeed there should be an alternative oil level detection procedure available through iDrive.

gotcha that’s what i assumed. And sorry it’s “new” to me haha. it’s a 97 e38

Yes, I didn't mean exactly new. My 2013 car has both and dipstick is nearly impossible to use: I can't do that following the manual procedure meticulously - no level is seen, only the oily tip. But a BMW mechanic changing the oil did show me the dipstick level. The automated procedure is a savior.

And 97 e38 is a good-looking car, by the way!
