Option 6NR requirements - what a mess
It appears there is some data which suggests that to use the upcoming 6NR phone capabilities, one has to also have the 6NF or smartphone option installed.
There really are two hurdles: if the 6NR option which will be available on post 3/2011 build cars can even be software updated for post 10/2010 cars (Combox) and if so, does it really require the cradle option which has been previously viewed as useless and is not upgradeable.

How does this relate to the music+video cradle from this post? which is supposed to be for 3/2011 cars...

I have no idea, but clearly it is becoming an option nightmare. First, BMW releases an iPhone app in December for features that are not available until after 3/2011 builds. Without any upgrade path mentioned, it then becomes a great way to potentially stop orders. The possible smartphone cradle need is still undetermined for the 6NR capability, much less if pre- 3/2011 cars can even use it anyway. Makes the Combox functionality questionable if 6NR then requires even more hardware.

I'm also curious to know if there will be a software upgrade path for pre 3/2011 COMBOX cars.

I'm a week 7 build ... this is annoying
It's not that I give a damn about facebook or twitter integration, but i could see other future apps integration providing some useful / cool features.

+1. Doesn't help that we are also be taunted with this by BMW releasing an iPhone app in early December that touts this capability.

Well I've decided I'm not delaying my order over this. I'll have the combox so if I ever miss it I imagine a retrofit would be possible. Besides if I change my order once more I think my CA will punch me.

Some new 6NR data at last, looks like 6NF is required:

Interest, thanks for posting. So to summarize that PDF, it says:
The following optional equipment is also required to enable the ordering of option 6NR: − Navigation system – BMW Professional Multimedia (option 609). − Bluetooth telephone preparation with telematics (option 633). − USB audio interface (option 6FL). − Telephone USB audio interface (option 6NF). I ordered my car with every single option, however, 633 was not one of them. I wish BMW would have info on pre-March 2011 Combox cars whether or not it will be supported!!

Yes, I do have 639 (I have a copy of the option codes for my car from my CA). Thanks for pointing that out.
Perhaps 633 is slightly updated HW (or perhaps just updated SW) thus the change in option code?

So this should be no more than a change of code for internal purposes. Last edited by Technic; 01-15-2011 at 06:38 PM.. |

I have an iPhone 4 cradle on pre-order. PN 84212199392. Hopefully that will also be the same one that will allow the new 6NR features to work. I'll definately keep everyone posted. Thanks Technic.

Technic ....So ordering the 6NF (SP Integration) is probably a wise gamble to potentially gain 6NR capability and the actual required separate cradle ordered in addition will be different than the current ones shipping. Correct?

If you are ordering then you do not need to gamble, order the whole 6NF + 6NR combo. It will be cheaper and it will work without the modifications, extra parts and new wires that may be required for a retrofit -if any.

Problem is I have an order in with a week 6 build, which will be before March. I just added the 6NF at last minute. Could move the date for a post 3/1 build, but will then give up Holiday Cash and also gain $500 price increase.
