2010 M3 with 163,000km, still worth replacing rod bearings?

I figure the car is worth around $20,000 still, to do a rod bearing job would be around $3,500...that's a tad over 17% of the value of the car.

There are no external signs that the rod bearings are on its way out. Should I just roll the dice that's 90% in my favor that the rod bearings will be fine?

If my engine goes in five years, I would just total the car. Or if within five years, I can get a rebuilt engine, probably be around $10k.

$3,500 (bit high imo) now or risk $10k+ later.

There is no external way to tell when/if they will go until it’s too late.

You need to find a shop that doesn't charge that high.

Rod bearings and ARP bolts can be picked up for $1,000 CDN.
Oil Change Kit - $180 CDN
Oil Pan Gasket - $50 CDN
Engine Mounts - $150 if necessary (I would do it at 160k)

$1,400 parts after tax if you source yourself
$1,100-$1,300 Labour after tax (10-12 hours is a solid estimate for a reputable shop)
$2,500-$2,800 Total after tax is the ball park

2010 M3 @ 160k is worth 25k CDN
Someone will pay a premium for this job to be done when it comes time to sell.
Your also doing an oil change which you should time when your next interval would be anyway ($200 savings).

My advice would be to do it. I guarantee you get $1,500 back when it comes time for resale and it shows the car was well maintained.

This. You're basically taking a huge gamble that it goes another 5 years. It may not make it 5 days, no way to tell.

Either spend the $3k now or worry about dropping $10k at any given moment in the next five years. The answer is clear as day, at least in my eyes...

Its more than $10k said and done for a used engine. And you would never know if the used engine would have some underlying issues either.

And the rebuilt engine is even more money. A rebuilt engine from Carbanh is $20K + a working core engine.

Either way, $3.5k for a rod bearing change is still better than forking whatever amount of money it is for a new motor.

I also forgot to mention, the S65s are running more an more scarce on the market each year the generation gets older. Those who have these engines laying around aren't going to sell it for any cheaper either.

my mathematical head tells me:

ExpecteValueOfRodBearingJob = EngineReplaceCost * ProbabilityOfThrowingRod
ExpecteValueOfRodBearingJob = $20000 * 5%
ExpecteValueOfRodBearingJob = $1000

both $20k for replacement and 5% of occurrence are generous over estimation...
so a homo economicus wouldn't be doing a rod bearing job

but it still linger on my mind. especially this past weekend i just met a fellow blew his 30k miles LRP edition not long ago...

You're in Vancouver so I don't know any shops around there. I'm sure a bunch of forum members would be able to give some advice.
Regardless, phone a few shops in your area.
Ask how many times they have done the service and their price + parts list.
Use my pricing as a base line.
Order your parts from FCP Euro.
They have good deals on right now.

The rod bearing replacement in these cars is just a fact... they got to be done. I don’t know why people would roll the dice and not do it ASAP. My car has 33k km on it and I did mine. They were not the worst posted in the forms but they were showing the classic signs of wear...

I thought I remember a thread here of people in van going to a shop to have it done. Just do a quick search.

I'd say that's a big gamble and your replacement motor value is potentially lower than it actually is when the dust settles (at even USD, nevermind CAD).

Take a look at this guy's bearing quality at, call it, 70% the miles you have.

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showpo...42&postcount=1

I realize it's a lottery, but the immeasurable value you're not considering to have the bearings replaced is peace of mind.

Racing Greed in Port Coquitlam did my car, MaximusB recommended them to me. Total cost was $3,000.07CDN , I went with WPC Coated bearings as BE and VAC weren't going to be in stock for a long time, they didn't get stock till Feb?? I've seen one person on this forum that pulled their WPC ones with 99K Miles and it had very minimal wear on it. Its your choice for what brand of bearings you want to go with. Just don't do strictly OEM. Racing Greed also orders from Turner Motorsport, they go through the website with you and you select what you want. You can supply your own parts too I believe but call ahead and ask anyways.

Below is what I had ordered.

New Motor Mounts And Hardware (#11812283798-587) ($111.33)

E9X M3 Rod Bearing Overhaul Kit (WPC Treated Genuine BMW Bearings) ($833.21)

Can't remember if I did front subframe hardware

I picked up 10L of oil + filter from BMW Langley ($186-$210 can't remember the price)

They used the full 10L
