Help -- Sliding Noise Cannot Find The Source

There is a horrible sliding noise that goes back and forth when i accelerate/decelerate... I cannot find the source. It doesnt go left to right and only fron to back. Anyone else have this problem or have a good idea as to where i can find the source??

The dealership is trying to charge 150 to just diagnose the noise (which didnt come about until i had them service the car and change the oil). No telling how much they would over charge to remove the noise.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Does it sound like water?
I have water in my side skirts that doesn't seem to drain. I took it to the dealer once and had it drained but now it's back.

During freezing winter it turned into ice and slid once I started off but the noise didn't occur as I started from stop lights.

no not quite like water. it sounds like something flat (like a coin) sliding forwards and backwards... not like a rock or golf ball rolling arround

the exhaust uses metal hangars pushed into rubber mounts to support itself.

Your description of a coin sliding back and forth is quite good. It wouldn't surprise me if a technician left something behind after working on your car. My car is too new for me to get any any experience working underneath it. As for my previous cars, I've left several thing behind that made weird sounds. After investigating, I've usually found the culprit (wrench, washer, nut, bolt, etc).

Get a flashlight and look under the seat inside the floor vent. All kinds of small objects slide in there and have to be fished out. It's practically a guarantee that something is in there. Let us know what you find!

man you're my hero. just saw your post and thought id take a look while i was at work and there it is... like $5 in quarters and nickels in my floor vent. I will snake them out when i get home and give you the exact amount but surely that is the cause of this horrendous sliding noise!

Beats the $150 BMW was trying to charge me... this way im actually making a little money, right?

This may be the first and last time you get paid for fixing a problem with your own car!

Exactly what I was going to suggest - I've had stuff in those vents in both my M3 and Mercedes. Need to put screening over them.

Same here, always get a coin in the floor vent that goes to the back seats. One other area to look out for is the thigh bolsters. Coins can get under the leather then slide around in the tray underneath. Complete PITA to get them out.

My previous M had a washer or something loose in the door, sliding back and forth like you describe. Dealer found it and removed it. No charge.

Hello all. I think I have this problem but was hoping someone who's experienced this could confirm by listening to this video:
. The dealer is completely stumped (I had some work done on the roof, and the sound started right after that; from the drivers seat, it sounds to me like it's coming from the roof liner but to the mechanic it sounded like it was coming from the steering column (which he uncovered, with no luck). So now, after reading this thread, I'm thinking perhaps it's a screw in the under-seat vent and the sound is just carrying. In any event, if someone who's had this problem could take a listen and let me know if this sounds right, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'd put good money that it is a screw or something rolling around in one of the underseat air ducts. I has a pen down there at one time and it was confounding. Try putting a flexible magnet into the ducts and see if you can pull something out. If it's not magnetic, like a coin, you may need to use a vacuum with a slim attachment. Good luck!
