Buy a used v10 m5 and swap the engine to e92 m3

Hello everyone

I have a 2005 cls sitting in my garage its worth 40k euro.A used 2005 m5 here is not more than 45k euro.So what i am thinking is sell the cls get the m5 and than swap all off the necessary things to e92 m3.

This way i can reverse whenever i want i think

Has anybody tried something like this ? I mean not only an engine swap but the way i proposed ?

How hard can it be

In this area m5's are cheaper than m3's.

Sounds like a project for the sake of a project.

What's your motivation and goal behind this?

I can help you with this swap.

Make sure you take the hardware from the original M5 (ecu, car access system, and key)

You have to send me your cluster to make it 100% legit.

Mike are you saying you can help take this from beginning to end? This would be a fun project. If one were to buy an engine, harness and SMG tranny. Can you make this go in an e92?

Lets see.

Buy a used M5 for E45K then remove the motor, ecu, ignition, etc. and you are left with a worthless M5 (well not worthless but almost).

Then it will cost you who knows how much to do the transplant...but lets say E15K....and let's make an assumption that everything gets worked out and it actually runs.

So let's see what you have: a left over S65 motor that I guess you could sell and maybe you recoup E10K and who knows maybe E5K from the gutted M5 (parts car) so you spent E60K and recouped E15K so you netted E45K in total and you have an M3 with a v10 that makes 385 RWHP. Now you have to spend even more money (say another E8-10K) to mod it with full exhaust, intake, tune, etc. and make maybe 430 RWHP with bolt-ons. And you spent net E55K which is like USD $70K.

Good luck bro.

My m6 did 465whp on the eas dyno, which was 30 more than my z06 and just 35 shy of the f13 m6 that dynoed on the same day.... Just wanted to get the facts straight. And I also don't see the point in it, although I see that a company in Norway called ssp has already done the conversion. It's featured in 6/13 performance BMW magazine.

Pretty spot on estimates for cost, but those WHP estimates seem well below reasonable. Is there an explanation for that, or just quick guesswork?

Overall though, sounds like a fun project if the OP is willing to see it through to the end. Cost effective? Absolutely not, but he'll end up with a very unique final product if he can get it done right.

EDIT: Forgot the quote.

You forgot to add that he'll have to ride his tricycle to work each day while both cars are having surgery performed.

Kidding aside, it seems like a odd project, thus why I asked what his motivation and goal is behind it. If power is what he's after, supercharger is obvious. If being unique is the motivation, good luck with the project; you must have deep pockets!
