New Audi RS4

New AUDI RS4 will ditch V8 in favor of TT V6. Thoughts?

Seems like all the car companies got together for a meeting and decided that the new standard is 6cyl FI.

I swear the last time this happened was before my time (70's) during the American Muscle days. Kinda sucks because I feel like nothing is "special" anymore.

Meh....*sigh*

They need to put that 4.0l V8tt from the S6 in the new RS4/RS5!!

But I'm sure whatever boosted engine they put in, it's gonna be easily tunable! But that V8 from the S6 makes 560hp/600lb-ft with just a tune, that would be a insane for an M3/M4 rival!!

FWIW, The S6 motor is way under rated from the factory. Actual output is like 460-480hp and a roughly equal amount of torque. This has been shown on multiple independent dynos. If feels a bit freaky when something this big moves so fast.

Still, the S65 is, subjectively, a more enjoyable motor.

Yeah, I know this engine is largely underated, and the coolest part is that these Audis F/I engines can generally take a lot more then what they come with so no worrys to have when getting an aftermarket tune!! And yeah the S65 is totally a piece of art and that 8300rpm melody is truly something special but I almost certain that 600lb-ft of torque in a small german sport sedan could make me forget about it! But for sure the best thing is still to have both like you do! Please do me a favor, go tune your S6 and come back with a review!

By the way, what does "FWIW" stands for?!

Gents, keep in mind, strong Government(s) regulation is forcing car companies to Turbocharge/SC engines.

i think most people at people here, know fuel economy across the board is always something of concern and must improve.

i feel that most companies are making a push for more efficient engines.

i get the need for Forced induction. but i hate the fact that they are down sizing the motors and cutting cylinders. but still from a business stand point it makes sense.

where you have American companies who are keeping true to big powerful v8s. but doing so with modern technology to make the just fuel efficient as a little 3.0l turbo I6 BMW engine.

i bet that new 6.2L s/c GM V8 600HP+ (Z06) will match a M4 in MPG.

The Lexus 2015 RC-F looks to be only natural aspirated 5.0 V8 left in this segment with 2015 c63 going to 4.0 V8 twin turbo setup claims around 480 hp.

I know this is off topic.. but I still think BMW should have made a lighter and more efficient version of the current E9x engine for the M3/4. Maybe a 3.8L NA V8 with a small power and torque bump and then shed some bodyweight and call it a day!

Or even just detune the V8 in the M5/6.. I love me some 8 cylinders

It's hard enough getting power and torque bumps out of the current engine with the 4 L displacement. You really think they can squeeze out even more performance while downsizing the same engine? And if they put the TT V8 into the M3 and M4 then no one will buy the M5 and M6. The prevalent use of TT 6 cylinder engines makes perfect sense. They match or exceed the performance of the V8 predecessor, they get far better mileage, and they offer an opportunity to cut costs by sharing many aspects of the engine's design with the similar 6 cyl engines in the cheaper series model cars on which they are based.

I'm sure BMW could have squeezed considerably more power out of a new small V8, the S65 is not even direct injected so there is room for improvement! And if Porsche can get 475hp(probably underated with a 1/4 mile of 11.2@127mph in a 1450kg car) out of the GT3 6cyl 3.8l, I'm sure BMW Motorsport could have built a 4.0l V8 that produce +450hp! That and the weight saving technology of the new M3/M4 could have made a far more special M car IMO! But the times are what they are and we get a turbo M3 now, at least that makes an other good reason to be a happy e92 owner!

If BMW really wanted to do that, they can. However it will probably cost them some r&d money, and torque would be most likely little lower.

small engine does not mean better MPG. just FYI.

those ford 5.0L GT mustangs get better MPG than a BMW 4.0L V8. hell a Z06 7L gets better than both engines.

the S65 being small and a high strung motor is actually what hurts MPG.

the S65 is a small motor that works hard for its power. a Z06 is a big motor car that works very little for its power. if that makes sense

i bet that new Z06 with a 6.2L S/C V8 600Hp+ will match a M4`s MPG.
