Nubie Dyno Questions

Hu guys... apologies in advance for what I'm sure will be pretty simple questions for those in the know.

After reading all the dyno posts from the US forums, I recently managed to track down the only DynoJet Dyno in Perth (Australia) and I'm keen to get out there to see what my car is putting down compared to you guys in the US. When I went out for a prelim chat to the mechanic however the following things popped up;

1. Apparently he normally connects the dyno to parts of the engine to get a rev reading on the dyno but he said it would take about an hour to hook my car up... is this legit? Does he even need an engine connection to dyno our cars? If so, how do you guys do it and how long does it take to hook up?

2. He kept taking about doing the pulls in 4th (he mumbled something about a 1:1 ratio) but I've seen people on the forums taking about using 3rd for the dyno runs - does it really matter what gear he uses and, if so, why 3rd instead of 4th?

I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the above. If there were other dynojets in town I'm be going elsewhere but now I just need to be as forearmed as possible!

Thanks!

he has to connect to a coil to get spark, you need spark signal to get torque reading and rpms.

i don't think third is typical, i've read 4th is common and some use 5th as well. perhaps someone that has entered their data in the dyno library can confirm what are the standard request. ie/ gear and dyno settings.

i will say this, make sure he uses the area weather station data. any incorrect weather reading really skews the data.

Thanks for the info :-) any idea how long it would take to connect to the coil (or even the best way to go about it) ?

not long at all, but you have to remove the coil cover. i would remove it myself before heading over there.

Are you talking about the plastic cover that sits over the ignition coils? If so, how does it come out... I can't see and bolts etc?

Also if anyone has any photos of the actually dyno-to-engine connection that would be super helpful...? A picture paints a thousand words after all! :-)

The wires going to the coil is where the connection is made, can do it on any of the 8 coils. Euro shops have a fancy lil clip to do it with. Other wise they pull the sleeve on the wire back, its takes all of 10min if that to hook it up not an hr. Just did mine few weeks ago exactly that way.

4th is usually the gear people dyno in, I actually think 5th is 1:1 but most dont want you hitting that high of speed on a dyno. But almost everyone pulls in 4th on this car.

Thanks for the advice... Much appreciated. So the plastic cover just pops off then and you peel back the plastic sleeve from the wire that comes out of the top of the coil?

Correct, its 1 of the 3 wires going to the coil. I cant rember which color, my guy said it was for proper torque reading not RPM

if it's not for the rpm then why connect to an ignition coil?
the dyno needs the rpm reading for the calculation.
