I'm not one to start anything but I'm just asking around if anything here can be explained by a Master Tech or anyone that has ever seen or experienced this before.
That morning as I picked up my car, I seen the difference in mileage but didn't really think anything of it. I snapped the pic and thought maybe it's a "reset" BMW does with any of the recalls that were performed. Well it hasn't been sitting well with me. I just want a logical explanation here. |

The trip odo, regular odometer, and gas level definitely do not agree with each other. I'd talk to the dealer ASAP before things get too late. Pictures tell the story, as long as you can get a time stamp off them.

This will be one interesting to follow. I would definitely go back and talk to them, don't be shy showing your pictures and really ask for an explanation. I would be surprised if it isn't possible to wind back the odometer, but why would anyone make the trouble + take the risk, for a spin with a car?? Weird!

Hopefully you took these pics with your cell phone and were timestamped using the cell tower message info on your phone, that will give you credible data going forward...

-Can you provide a list of all was done to the vehicle during this visit to the dealer?
It is possible for the dealer to program mileage I suppose, because what if a cluster or -PCM (powertrain module) needed to be replaced, at some point somebody should be able to write into the modules (with special authority, footprints, and signatures left behind). -Another possibility that they updated some sort of sw, ad as part of the learning/adaptation process it rolls back the odo 1 mile, and bumps up the fuel tank.... who knows! Last but not least, are you sure you got the same car back? lol |

This has happened to me before exactly as you and it went backwards by 1 mile. I wouldn't worry about it. They had done the 3 recalls on my m3, it was a very rainy day and I had brought the car in dry that morning before the rain started and it was stored inside after the work was done so it never saw rain. I know they did not drive it more than from the bay to the storage area, they even showed me a video. Here is the response from the dealership foreman "The most likely reason for the roll back in mileage is due to the custom car key memory software that vehicle has in it. That software overwrites on the footwell module which along with the instrument cluster look for mileage tampering and will set the manipulation Dot in the cluster. In this case when battery being disconnected and both module rebooted the lower number displayed. This can happen to what we call system timing of messages and who reports first, with matching VIN# in both modules the mileages will always be off slightly this is always considered normal. This explanation is from our Foreman's since they have to report to BMW rep where they give all the insides on what the vehicle has as original, and aftermarket equipment. Also based on the logics of the software of our vehicles. I hope that this vehicle explain your question in regards the mileage roll back. Thank you."

Ferarri dealers used to be able to roll back mileage, quite a common occurrence. Never heard of BMW doing it.

I wish they'd rolled mine back when tech took a 35-40 mile joy ride to "test" the replacement DVD deck under warranty. Then at least I'd have been unaware of their shenanigans.....
