Definitely agree w/ whomever suggested driving shoes, aka loafers. find a good pair made of quality leather (easily under $100) and you'll never want to drive in anything else. Only thing is they're not really made for long distance walking so they do tend to wear our more quickly.

I still wear these for every spirited drive/track day. it matters. DC's driving/skate shoe back when they were just getting into rally with Pastrana and Subaru. These shoes are the tits still.

I went out in flip flops the other day. I hated that so I took them off. I hated that even more so I reassured myself I'll only drive in proper running shoes. IMHO no brand touches Nike for R&D aswell as quality for price.
Rev-matching for smooth and quick downshifts is something I'm teaching myself right now. Fun stuff.
