Actually what is fun when in DCT mode have your hand on the shifter and pretend you do shift and see how close you are to the computer sometimes I'm close other times way out in left field very seldom right on.

I think DCT gets quite boring over time... It's one of the reasons I want to sell my car. I miss MT.

I know SmG and DCT are diferent animals to compare. Although the concept is the same, Coming from the e46 SMG I had to do 6MT coming to my e90. Is more Engaging, piece of mind after warranty, no delay what's so ever. And on top of that I can rev and listen my V8 between gears...

Yeah I went from a DCT for 3 years to a 6MT. Love both of them, the DCT for its insane shifts and ease of use...but honestly the 6MT is awesome...being able to revmatch myself and wring out the engine with a manual is great. Its honestly a win win. Oh and I also don't use it as a commuter car so that might be the difference.

And the repair bills will get bigger, agree with your last point, even more reason to get that MT now mated to an high winding NA powerplant

I see there's a novel "war" -- DCT vs MT.

Drove both versions before purchasing; DCT on track. When it works, it's nice, but is it what satisfies me? It was a no brainer. There's nothing like getting the shift to happen when you want it to happen. Always! There's nothing like knowing that you're not at the mercy of transmission software. Always. There's nothing like knowing that your transmission will never go "Limp". Always. There's nothing like knowing that your car's transmission will not need an update -- trip to the dealer. Always. In the final analysis, there's nothing like the absence of unnecessary variables to complicate a fairly simple procedure that is executable, much like code, by most human beings with a modicum of attention to detail.

Not certain that DCT will even be around in the BMW lineup ten years from now what with certain rumblings about the industry; more likely single transmission with 8 or more gears. Regardless, you're probably right about this being the last chance to purchase a new M3 with an MT, and did BMW ever conceive an engine worthy of the last iteration of the M3 coupe with a manual transmission.

Considering that you enjoy driving both 6MT AND DCT,
and if you are planning to keep the car for a long time (yes plan changes, but for now if that's your idea), i'd say go for 6MT.

I have the 6MT, for me i wanted a 6MT no matter what, and i plan to keep this car and "add" another car instead of "replace" this M3 later.

There ARE times when i HATE the 6MT, i live close to NYC and often take my car to drive in the city, and it SUCKS when there's a good traffic ahead of me.

But i never thought about swapping my sports car's MT to an auto tranny. Maybe i'll save up and get a dd.

Given that I've never owned a DCT M3 (only driven one a few times), I am 99% sure I will get bored with it. Now, if it's a designated track car, maybe I'll get a DCT. For now, I enjoy my 6MT so much that I never consider getting a DCT.

I feel more connected and in control of the car with a clutch and shifter.

I've always had MT sports cars since my first car in high school.

It's just personal preference.

I thought i was a manual guy until l i drove a DCT. i kid you not i was so against getting DCT. But i gave it a chance and love it.

I feel this engine does very well with this transmission. Also i like the idea how i am getting a max performance options on the car if that makes sense. Its not the fastest thing for over 60k, mine was 75k sticker. So having that tranny will help with racing.

I went from a manual to DCT .

DCTs are fun at the track no doubt but I, too, will buy a manual *drivers* car as long as they are offered over any auto-manual out there. I haven't had an automatic car since 1991. I'd rather do the shifting and enjoy the feedback... This car communicates so well through the gearbox and clutch action. Also I get bored in DCT cars after a few min of aggressive driving, not much to do. Makes lesser drivers shine though I bet =)

I made the switch 09 DCT to 13 6MT

DCT was ok.. but it was boring to drive.. every shift was perfect no matter what.. a monkey could operate it..

I'm a lot more comfortable in a 6MT..

Only time will tell if DCT will be reliable.. or blow up like old M5 SMG's and cost $10K to fix

I know on my DCT i can mess a shift up, if i don't shift in time it lags to go into next gear. Of course this is not as bad as manual missing a gear or something.

Also for repairs, guys we are driving cars that cost over 60 grand. You think this is a ford mustang or something ? You gotta pay to play .... or have a warranty.

I owned a 2009 E90 M3 with a 6 speed and now own a DCT E92. I think both gearboxes are a bit unrefined for DD but the DCT does shine more on the track. I have a faster lap time on the E92 DCT by about .8 secs but i enjoyed the track time more on the 6 speed, then again the dct does help you focus on the track more and less on the shifting specially on a high powered car like the M3. For commuting they are both equally clunky except you can control the start better with the 6 speed since the DCT can make you look like an idiot off the stop light but you do get the option of using the dct in automatic if you commute through traffic a lot so it compensates for its idiotic behaviour. I think the DCT is the best of both worlds but i do have to admit the regular stick shift is more fun. If you plan to keep the car for a long time and you warranty runs out i would go with a stick shift though cause a DCT will be more of a pain to work on.

I think the Dct goes with the m3 better, feels like it was designed with it in mind.

Having said that, I have a manual porsche boxster and that compliments that car much better than the pdk I feel.

Similar with the new m5, Dct is better in that.
