Did I lug the engine there?

I was driving around 40 mph, and somehow was in 7th gear in DCT. Obviously the RPM was around 2k. I then WOT and floored it. Car didn't accelerate very fast.

I've had my car for almost a month, so I'm still trying to baby it somewhat lol. Did I lug the engine and cause long - term damage?

This should probably be in the stupid questions thread, but I just want a quick answer, since different things have been said about engine lugging, where one Car and Driver article even said it helps fuel economy.

Bro, you just ruined the rod bearings, you need to replace them now!

Honestly, you'll be fine, but I wouldn't suggest it for a high revving engine like ours..

When you floored it you should have pulled the left paddle and the DCT would have found the right gear for you!

You'll be fine...I did the same thing a few times (with MT) over the years and engine is still running strong (knock on wood) pushing 80k miles. Although it is highly recommended to let rev higher than the efficient dynamic recommendations are..that is, for DCT keep it in a more sporty shift mode to let the engine rev up a bit prior to next shift or of course if using paddles, plan on shifting at 3+k rpm at least.

It would be a bigger disservice to the motor if the car was under load, ie. going up a hill or something. Keep the revs high, the motor will thank you for it.

Car is fine. But don't make that a habit. As stated above these engines like to rev so let her go if u need to accelerate. I'm only in 7 when cruising at stable speed. All acceleration requires a downshift, usually to 4 on DCT at legal-ish freeway speeds.

No problem at all. In testing we've done 7th gear full throttle multiple times from 1,000 RPM up to redline following camshaft movement.

You won't hurt anything, just make it a habit to downshift in the future because it's incredibly slow there anyway.

Damn it, today I start the car, then I smell the faintest burning. I back away, and I see this on the ground...

At least I'm still under warranty.

Edit: Car passed PPI with flying colors, and passed two complimentary "multi - point inspections" from BMW dealers while doing an oil change and alignment.

No, with a throttle by wire car like the m3 the computer won't even open the throttle bodies all the way at low RPM.

Doesn't sound right to me nor do I believe this is a correct statement. Anyone able to verify? Genuinely curious. BPMSport maybe has an answer?

Even if the OP was in manual mode, the computer would have downshifted to 4th or so if leaving it in 7th was going to hurt the engine. W/drive be wire, the throttle prob didn't open all the way. You have to work at it to hurt a modern computer controlled drive by wire engine.

Is 2k really that low though? I drive around plenty of times in that rpm range and don't feel that the engine is lugging. Should be fine OP.
