How much are you guys getting on trade in?

How much are you guys getting on trade in on your car? mines an e92 with 2 accidents on the car fax but nothing structurally wrong with the car with 70k miles, manual, c/f roof, and all the other stuff that came with that year. I've gotten some offers from some dealers already but they are low as fcuk.

how low? I checked KBB value for my car the other day and it came out to be around $26k, which was significantly lower than I expected. I dont think (or I hope) that the KBB value is indicative of actual resale value. Dealerships will probably use that as their benchmark for trade in value though.

That's not false, but any little thing they can use to drive the price down is, of course, going to enter the conversation and be exaggerated. Their tactic might work for an uninformed owner of a more pedestrian 3-series, but they're fools if they think M3 owners will fall for it. If they really want to overplay that card, just reply, "Oh okay, I'll just go sell it on my own. Plenty of people interested in M3s. Maybe I'll come back when I'm ready to buy [new car]".

The other common argument is, "Well, that's the price they're going for at auction." My response in the past has been, "That's cool, sounds like you guys should just buy one that way. Thanks for your time."

Those are silly #'s. Sell it yourself, why hand the dealer so much profit. I've still to this day never traded a car into a dealership.

And what does the airbag have to do with it? Once it's swapped out for a new one...?

Because after 9 months of this airbag recall hanging over our heads, there is still no end in sight. In my area, BMW has rented warehouses that are now full of cars that were trades or off lease, cars that, like mine, are still awaiting new airbags. Hundreds and hundreds of cars that they don't want to sell, or cannot sell, car with 'defective' airbags.

And KBB $ #s are almost never used by $tealers to value a trade because they are higher than the alternatives. On the east coast, they go with Galves or the Manheim auction #s, or whatever other number$ they can use to justify lowball offers.

Go ahead and sell it yourself, but you'll then have to do the sales tax dance that might eat up the difference between trade and private sale. Ignore the sales tax at your own peril.

Tbh 20k seems normal for a m3 with 70k and 2 accidents. Usually one accident is a turn off lol

The issue with the airbags is that they CAN NOT legally sell them until replacement. That means they sit on their investment longer, which means they need to pay less to make the same amount. It sure as hell isn't coming out of their pockets.

Sales tax must be paid by the purchaser. In a common sale between two individuals (not companies), you would have to pay the DMV sales tax upon registration.

ASK ME HOW I KNOW

haha. Yeah CT DMV is fun.......

In Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix area, it's 7.9% sales tax on car purchases that I'd get back on the trade. So my private sale would have to be at least 10% more than the trade value to make it worth dealing with the hassle.

The LAST thing I'd do is sell my car to a dealer unless I needed the $$$ immediately which thank goodness I don't. Why would I want to give a large chunk of the proceeds to someone else whose main purpose is to steal the deal? The other consideration (besides the airbag issue) is timing as in this time of year isn't the best for higher sale prices. If someone can, I suggest waiting until spring when folks are wanting to hit the road with the nicer weather, hence more buyers.

$45k for my '13 with 19k miles which was similar among multiple dealers. Worst offer by far was from the dealer where I bought and serviced the car, trying to get me into an M4... $39k.

kbb is a bit of a joke, and doesn't quite take into account market demands. our cars aren't that special, but certain combinations and mileage still command a higher price.
