golf 7r is fast

Took my friend's golf 7r with apr stage 1 for a spin and this thing is fast, maybe even faster 0-80 then the m3. Cant imagine a 2.0 turbo hatchback can be that fast

Having owned a lot of other high powered turbocharged 4 cylinder cars, I have no doubt they are fast. Don't judge a car based on the size of the engine.

You miss the fact he said STG1 which actually is faster than E90/E92 M3's. They have ran 11.9s with nothing but STG1 tune and intake. Maybe past 140mph the M3 might have an advantage but a lot lighter and underrated power makes them quite fast.

Also, the article you quoted is substantially old and not accurate. The actual production DSG Golf R's have been banging off 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds stock and 3.7-3.9 with a tune. The ol' S65 might want to be a tad careful.

I know never would have though this day would come. S65 still sounds better we can all hold onto that. I still think at the higher speeds a tuned Golf R will have trouble but up to 100-120mph those look to be damn quick. Just seen the latest Evo review and it handily beat the new Audi RS3 around a race track.

Good thing I got a deposit on a 2016 Golf R Gotta keep up with the times!

These cars are very quick on the track for sure. All you need is good coilovers with c.plates and r-comp. tires. I was actually ready to replace my 135i with new golf R, but now i am waiting for Golf R400.

if I were limited to a single vehicle, the Golf R would definitely be near or at the top of my list

Owned an 04 .:R 32 and a 2012 R and I must say that I enjoyed both vehicles. More so the R32. To me that was and will always be the true R!! Just not feeling the looks of the new R.

Now, the R400.....that is a great looking R!!! Would jump on one of those in a heartbeat!!

There are always faster cars out there--some for a lot cheaper than our cars. Supposedly the recently released Civic Type R is faster around the Nurburgring than the F8x M. Meh. I think VW makes a great car and I still own a VR6 corrado with a supercharger on it. It has 600 lbs front springs, 400 lbs rear springs, is corner balanced, and has a front LSD. It's a fun car that is fantastic on the track. My M3 is such a better car though. And yeah, the mkVII R is also better/nicer than my VW.

The point is that if you live by numbers your entire life, you'll never be happy. The fact remains that the S65 has much more potential than any 2.0t engine. You can bolt on 600+ hp on our cars if you wanted to blow past most cars on the street. It's impressive that a car like a Golf R is that quick with a stg I tune, but not altogether surprising either. DSG+AWD+a good power:weight will result in impressive acceleration pretty much every time.

I started my obsession with GTI's in the 80's. I really like the MkVII's. Haven't checked out the new R but if I could only spend $40K on a new fun car it would probably be at the top.

Plenty of cheaper, smaller cars quicker than the E9x M3's. But the E9x M3's aren't built for brute straightline speed. They're well balanced at the track and excel in the twisties. The S65 has linear power delivery and make peak power up high, like actual race cars. All the while it is very streetable and tame when needed.

I wouldn't trade an E9x M3 for a Focus RS, Golf R, or Civic Type R, although these are some hot hatches, which I have a great affinity for.

OK so I am now racking my brain, as to whether it is a decent idea to trade in my dakar E92 for a 16' R, seeing that gas mileage will be about 60% of what I'm currently spending, and these Golfs are GREAT everyday drivers that don't attract too much attention. Yes, I would mod my future Golf R with basic stg 1/2 stuff, wheels, etc. I like the idea because it's fast, new, has a warranty and is practical/efficient. I just know the body lines aren't going to excite me like my M3, but is it a great car to drive every day? Will I be excited to drive it? The E92 gets me going, but at the same time, for short trips I almost feel guilty firing up the V8.

Was in the same boat as you. I eventually pulled the trigger as performance wise it's very close if not better in most areas. It's more practical is just about every form AWD, better gas mileage, roomier, cheaper, warranty, etc. The three things I worried about was steering feel, sound, and the looks. There are few members that have M3 or Porsche's and the steering feel has been reported to be every bit as good. Sound is subjective but I think short of a exotic there aren't many cars than sing the S65 song. Lastly, the looks being a hatch aren't near the lines of the E92.

For myself I could live with the sound but leaving the timeless E92 styling will be a bit hard. But in my opinion the Golf R is better in many ways. If I ever wanted another dedicated weekend car the E92 would be the top of my list. Living in the PNW though I rarely drive my car with our spastic weather and it sits all winter. It was time to save money and have one car instead of two. I get my 2016 in 1-2 months possibly so I will see how much I enjoy my decision

Lots of cars faster than our M3 in a short sprint from a stop. But a couple simple mods - some grippy tires like PSS, ESS tune with 8,600 rev limit, front cat delete and subframe bushings on a DCT car I bet would knock out 0-60's in high 3's all day long and pull strong all the way up to 200mph.

This is of course assuming someone would buy a golf R over an M3 if they had the chance. Cause I'm pretty sure no one would do that..

This is funny. I was test driving a Golf R but my wife was vehemently opposed because she said it was terribly ugly. Lucky for me the dealer had a used M3 on the lot two cars down from the Golf. After that the search was on. I did really like the Golf however and I would not have been unhappy to own it.

No of course. I'm not saying it's a bad car or even less fun. However the looks, sound and performance of the M3 is just leagues ahead. Not to mention overall quality.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I just found humor in the fact that I was in the exact same spot just a few weeks ago and I wouldn't expect these cars to be cross shopped. Maybe I should have used the word "ironic" instead of "funny."

You would be surprised how many people would and have currently. There's also a fair bit of former P car owners buying them because of the added functionality with minimal loss in performance. There are a surprising number of former M car guys over on there forums and not one is unhappy with there purchase...

Hatchbacks are a love it or hate it but your opinion isn't shared by everyone...this coming from a person who has owned an M3 for quite some time...

You mean the Golf Rs are FINALLY fast enough. VW Golf Rs have been behind the curve since 2003.

STIs and Evos has been there and making a similar car for a while now.
