Power steering pump whine
Update: I had someone give it gas while I listened for the sound and there is a definite whine coming from the power steering pump when under load. Its not speed dependent, but happens whenever I give it gas. There's fluid in the reservoir, but the fluid looks very brownish green. I'm going to have the system flushed and hopefully the whine goes away. The serpentine belt looks in good condition and doesn't feel loose.
I recently had the stock crank and power steering pulley put back on my car, previously I had the rogue engineering power pulleys and the car was fine. After having the stock pulleys put back on I'm noticing a whine when the AC is on and when pressing the gas pedal (regardless if I'm accelerating or not.) When pressing the gas, it's a slight whine almost like a supercharger whine. And it happens throughout the RPM range. I'm thinking maybe loose belt? Or maybe my AC and power steering need to be recharged? Last edited by oct1285; 01-26-2015 at 12:12 PM.. |

I checked the fluid, there's the appropriate amount in there. The whine is definitely coming from the power steering pump. I had someone give it gas while I listened for the noise. The noise only happens when I'm giving it gas. Doesn't make any noise when turning the steering wheel.

I had a shop flush the power steering system and found metal shavings. They say it's a sign that the pump is on its way out. Due to my negligence, I was probably driving around on a dry pump for quite a while. The flush did seem to make the whine go away while driving or at least it's quiet enough now to where I can't really hear it while normal driving |

This is a good excuse to get a Mity-Vac if you don't have one already. Makes power-steering fluid swaps easy as can be. Suck the old stuff out, pour the new stuff in. |

Yeah planning to flush it tomorrow although Im just gonna use a hand pump to suck out fluid, refill it, turn the car on, turn wheels left to right, and then repeat the whole process 4 to 5 times. Hopefully it will solve it. I havent done a full flush before and Ive heard it can be messy as well as complicated for me.

Yeah. Running about an oz in my reservoir for the last 5k miles or so. Got rid of a low speed groan I started to hear after I upsized my tires. I don't think its actually printed on the bottle, but if you email liquimoly they'll tell you its fine to use in small quantities in PS systems.

After that I tried a m1 0w40/5w50 blend with ceratec since my iron wear was showing a bit high from the switch to 0w40, and it had a positive impact on my wear numbers in my oil reports. This last OCI I went with lubegard bio-tech since I was going to be storing it for 3+ months. Lubegard uses some kind of neato ester base and a nuclear moly formulation so it's claimed to never fall out of suspension as some reports indicate MoS2 will if left dormant for long amounts of time and lots of esters to keep the seals happy This next OCI I've I'm going with straight M1 5w50 and Archoil's fascinating AR9100 nanoborate-ester compound. I'll report back on that once I've run it; I love all this shit |
