Thumbs up Want to buy: M3 Competition Sedan - Portland/Seattle

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
Serious buyer looking for a ZCP E90 M3. I live in Portland but happy to travel anywhere in the PNW for the right car.

DCT
ZCP
Low miles
Enthusiast owned a big plus
Flexible budget for the right car.

Open for general feedback from current M3 owners -
I test drove a 2011 DCT sedan, beautiful car in near perfect condition. My hesitation is that it’s a non ZCP. Is that something you guys think I should hold out for?

Spending $30k on a used car and feeling like I should get exactly the options I want. Yes? No?

Thanks!
Nick

I waited almost 2 years to find the right car, had every option I wanted except ZCP. I honestly think that the competition package will mean more come resell than when you're actually driving it. unless of course you're tracking.

Doing research prior to purchase gave me the impression than many comp owners still mod their vehicles so I didn't see the point in holding out any longer if I might eventually swap out many of those parts. Just my 2 cents

BTW, I'm in S Oregon where there are barely any M3s coming up for sale so your search might be easier given your location.

I think it’s worth waiting.

I had no interest in an aftermarket suspension and the zcp lowers the car a perfect amount for me. That and the wheels sold it for me.

I think it’s a significant upgrade, but others may disagree.

30k? For that kind of money you should hold out for zcp if that's what you prefer. when I was looking I wanted zcp and I held out for it. I was willing to pay less for a non-zcp but I didn't want it to be a 2011+ (which is when zcp started). I agree w/jackie; to me it's lowered just right and the wheels are my favorite. Ive had 2 zcps (dct and manual) and would have it no other way. just my 2cents.

I think it's worth waiting for a ZCP car. Just prepare yourself for a lengthy search - I'm looking for the same and I'm going on 18 months.

It makes it a lot easier if you're flexible on color. It also helps that you want a DCT.

Good luck!

You may want to keep an eye on the BMWCCA classifieds if you’re not already doing so.

I found my 2013 M3 coupe there after looking for only like 2 weeks and it ticked all of the boxes for me. Space grey, 6MT, competition package, carbon fiber roof. Immaculate condition, low mileage and enthusiast owned. I think I got super lucky to have found it that fast but I have also noticed there’s not a lot of talk about the BMWCCA classifieds on this forum. Translation, you may not have as much competition there for a well spec’d car as you might here.

A couple of thoughts for you:

1. You may have to travel further than you want in order to get the right car if you’re picky about what you’re looking for.

2. You may have to pay a little more than you want in order to get the right car, especially through the club. Members tend to have high opinions of their cars lol

Good luck!

Let me add that you will most likely not find a 2011 E90 ZCP (only year this car was made) with low mileage for $30k. Given that you want DCT it will be a little cheaper than 6MT but finding one with low mileage for $30k just ain't happening. You can however find 2009 -2011 non ZCP DCT cars at that price.

I was thinking the same thing.

I'm in the market too. Depending on what you mean by low miles, there are two silverstone DCT cars on eBay right now with 80k(ish) miles. One for $26.9k and one for 24.9k. One of them appears to be a 1-owner car and the other looks like it's had rod bearing work done. There are also 4 for sale right now in the SF Bay area (on craigslist). Which is close enough to the PNW. Check there too.

Prices on these (especially DCT's) are coming down quite a bit. Again, depending on what you mean by 'low miles' you might be able to find what you're looking for, for $30k or under.

Here are the cars I've found on eBay. I've been in communication with both sellers and believe you could even get another $1k-$2k off these prices.

Here is the one for 26.9K

And the one for 24.9K (One owner?):

When I hear low mileage on a 2011 I'm assuming 30k range. Not that 86k is "high" mileage but it is one year of driving away from 100k. Nice find on both of those by the way if they are accident free.

Low mileage definitely means 50k miles or less.

Yeah that's what I figured for 30k mile or less car, you won't get it at $30k or below, but there are some 100k+ mile cars for sale here, so 80k is a bit lower for the 2011 year in general.

What do you think about these two eBay cars? I'm told there are no accidents or paint work.

Low mileage to some is 20k. I have a buddy who stopped his search criteria at 25k miles. Reality though is we need to wait for OP to weigh in and let us know what low mileage means to him. Yea I'll take a 50k mile M3 every day of the week.

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate the gut check if the general consensus is that $30k budget won’t get me what I want, I need to know sooner rather than later!

Here is some more context for my point of view-
To me low mileage means 60k or less.
I’m not planning to heavily modify this car so ZCP suspension and wheels means a lot.

The local non-DCT car I drove has 50k miles, totally stock but it doesn’t have any options except heated seats for $29.7k. Though it’s very clean. Silverstone/Fox red.

I happened to find a ZCP sedan with 63k Miles for $22k though it has a salvage title. Car appears really clean by description from seller and the photos. Only parts that were replaced were front bumper, oil cooler and under panels. Seller provided pics from the accident. Snow storm lost control into a curb at low speed. The price is right but salvage title makes me very skepical plus potential resale problems for me years from now. Though I love the specific car and it’s got tons of options! it’s pretty much how I would spec the car if it were new.

@e90m305
Thanks for the links. I’m not comfortable buying from eBay without a chance to see the car in person.

The Bay Area is an option but it’s more than twice the distance from Seattle. Just makes it hard logistically not factoring time off work and time away from my wife and 1 year old.

last year i was in the market for e90 in the seattle area. after months of looking did not find one. i ended up pulling the trigger on a 13 e92 dct 12.5 k miles here in seattle from the owner . its a tradeoff i made betweenn extra doors and getting a clean car ... but ao far i an happy with my decision. does mean a little more work especially with kids
- might have to tradeoff a little here .in your case .. as youll have more luck with 2 doors

Good luck with the search, they are out there, just gotta be patient. I have been looking for a clean, manual E92 or a C4S 996 garage queen for nearly a year and they are out there, just gotta be ready to buy once they come up.
