Don't know about Uber, but before another argument gets thrown around: Public transportation in rural 'Bama is pretty shit ...

There was a similar story from the North on YouTube a few month ago about a guy walking to an interview when he was recognized by a restaurant owner who then hired him.

This countries needs more stories like this and there are lots of them. People are generally nice to one another.

There was similar story of young guy working at a UPS distribution center and he did not have car and walked 5 mile both ways for months on end and never told anyone. His supervisor found out and took up a collection at the distribution center and bought the kid a $1100 used car. When the dealer who sold the supervise the car found out what it was for sold it for cost.

https://www.today.com/news/co-worker...lks-10-t108762

There is an older woman near me I see her every morning walking, rain or snow she is always walk to her work and her walk is at least 4 or 5 miles. My son's GF, younger brother stopped a couple of times to offer her a ride and she always refuses, I see her in the Grocery store and one time we offer to take her and her bag home and she refuses.

Our society is focusing on too may of the bad apples these days verse things like this. We need to stop worrying about the complainer and encourage people to do for themselves and help those who are trying to help themselves.

Great story all around! Not many ppl would even consider walking 20miles to work overnight! So that shit is beyond impressive. And kudos to the local police there lending him a hand also. 👍

I like the story, hate the circumstance. Lack of public transportation sucks.

Need more people like this in the world.

Other people are like, "sorry I am 30 minutes but I needed to get gas and the gas line was long then Starbucks took forever for my drink!"

This is definitely what we need to get back to in society. These are the people that make things happen versus making excuses. Sadly too many of us judge or make assessments of who people are rather than who they will become.

I find it disappointing neither his GF or any of his friends could give him a ride to work, even if they had to drop him off a bit early.

I've left for work early so I could drop off friends who had car issues.

I agree. It was the guy's first day at work and no one close to him could give him a ride? Unless everyone else's car also broke down or they were going out of town, that really sucks. It sounds to me like he would have done it for them in a heartbeat if the situations were reversed.

We just don't know everyone else's circumstance, and I hate that his livelihood was a result of someone's kindness.

I grew up in the suburbs, little to no public transit and if there was some it did not get to where I worked and I started to work at 14 and road my bike or walked to work anywhere from a few miles to 5 or 6 miles on a bike and there has been time I road my bike to work at 5 AM in poring down rain and work in wet cloths for a few hours, non of these were office jobs.

You do what you have to do, and I do not see much of that today and when I do I am more than willing to help those people out.

Just think the GF and friends are now thinking this guy walk to work and was given a car. You would hope they all got a very good life lesson of those who help themselves will rewarded for their efforts. But most likely not they all probably thinking, why did he get it and not them.

I live in FL where public transit doesn't exist, but Uber does make it easier. When I was in NY visiting, between the subway and Uber, I had a very easy time getting around. It was awesome.

I asked the question about Uber at home last night when this story came on the news....and my wife told me to "GTFO of here with your negativity"

I freely admit to being cynical (and an asshole) but i do hope that the guy really had exhausted all other options and wasn't just a terribly un-resourceful person.

That said, i agree with you guys who are saying that we need to celebrate more of the positive stories of humanity.

You could argue that his livelihood is a result of his hard work and dedication. He worked hard to land the job, worked hard to get to the job, and will no doubt be rewarded not just with the new car but with stable employment after all this media attention dies down.

He sounds like a really great kid who dug deep and is catching a break.

Thee motivator behind his walk continues to cross my mind. We all have specific wants/needs that motivate us to do certain things. Seven hours and 20 miles is quite a distance to walk to a job. Although I am inspired by his motivation, it does make me question what the motivation is/was....family needs, possible eviction, medical, etc. At the end of the day I don't guess that it matters because the story is of nothing aside from his determination....still makes me wonder though. I've done some pretty desperate things in life to cross "finish lines" before.

Or perhaps he wanted to walk 500 miles, and 500 more...just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at their door
