If you were a little more vague we would likely be able to help more. Just saying.

If I wanted to put a used transmission out of another used M3 and put it in mine, is that possible?

I think what everyone is wondering is if you're talking DCT to DCT (which should be entirely possible, I'll let others confirm), or 6MT to DCT (which is technically possible if money isn't an issue, but would cost more than the car is likely worth and require a bunch of machining / other parts, and I don't think it's ever been done, so effectively not possible).

Honest to god, man! Why is it so hard to get a little context here??

Yes, of course you can put another transmission in your car. Used parts get put in cars all the time. Unless there is some "other" reason which you have yet to provide us that would explain why this would even be a question I don't know what else to tell you.

I don't really know what other context I can give lol, I'd just be swapping the units.

Okay, I have an idea. Let's do this 3rd grade open ended response style.

What is your current cars year, make, and model?
Answer here:

Does you car have a manual or a DCT?
Answer here:

What is the reason you want to swap your DCT?
Example: your current DCT is having (fill in the blank) issue. Requiring an entirely new DCT.
Answer here:

This is due by tomorrow at 12 PM EST.

Yes. Of course.

Since it's DCT to DCT, why is this even a question? Not trying to be rude, just seems like the answer is common sense...

I've just had people say that it's not possible to do that given the coding of the individual transmissions from the factory, trying to settle this conflicting info I've been given

Yes this has been done many times. It's true there might be some software side stuff but should all be solvable without much trouble.

It's often much cheaper to swap broken DCT with a working used unit than to attempt repair on one.

What are the symptoms of the "possible failure"?

Is it jerky? Will it not go into gear? Will it not shift into a specific gear? Does it not go into park when the engine is off?

Hit a piece of road debris and lost quite a bit of fluid. One shop said replace but I'm taking it to the shop I usually go to tomorrow

If it cracked the pan and you drove it w/o lubrication for an extended amount of time you'll probably save yourself a headache by just swapping for a used one. They're pretty bullet proof so I wouldn't be too concerned with mileage on a used unit.

I believe the can be had for around 1-2k No idea what labor would be.

A good indy shop familiar with this platform should be able to handle the software aspects for you.

It is possible, you will need someone experienced with coding to rewrite the vin to the mechatronics or the car wont start.

Fixed that for you, OP. Context.

You are lucky it is just the pan and you caught it. At least it isn't a faulty mech unit like my scenario. You will probably just need the pan and bolts.

But yes you can swap a faulty E9X DCT with an used E9X DCT. Good deals can be found if looked around.

I got one from a reputable seller on Ebay for $1,300 shipping included. I forgot the mileage but it was lower than my broken DCT.
