O2 sensor replacement and alternatives
The bank two pre-primary cat o2 sensor went out due to a short. The dealer is charging $289.00 for this parts WTF!?!? Is there anyone that is running any alternatives?
My rear o2 sensors are disabled with the ESS tune. Are there any differences in the physical capabilities between the front and rear o2 sensors or is it just the cable length? I have done a few searches to no avail.. EDIT: I found out that the front sensors are wideband and the rear sensors are narrow band No. Description Supplement Qty Part Number 01 REGULATING LAMBDA PROBE L= 340MM 2 11787537984 03 Lambda probe, black L= 325MM 2 11787539125

Call me crazy, but I don't think the price is that bad given the cost of the car.

When warranty runs out these cars can be expensive to repair

The car needs both primary 02 to run properly. The 02 looked pretty standard to me, like Bosch WB02, but I did not check for part numbers or do any cross referencing when I had them out.
What sometimes happens is people twist them out instead of disconnecting the harness and unscrewing them, when changing the midpipe to an x-pipe. The top of the 02 is sharp and cuts into one or more of the wires, either severing it or shorting it. Left alone, they are pretty reliable and designed to run 100k miles. |

Yep, just make sure it is the correct Bosch sensor. You can get it less than the dealer is charging for sure.

Can the pre-cat sensors be swapped on jack stands at home with standard tools? It's hard to tell in the diagram, but hoping the pipes don't need dropping?

You won't be able to get an o2 sensor socket on them, but you can just use an open ended wrench to get them out. Shouldn't have to drop the x-pipe.

One of my pre-cat 02 sensors went out this week as well. I called about 5-6 places and found that ECS was the cheapest at $148 for the Bosch branded sensor. From what I was told, Bosch makes the OEM 02 sensor for BMW, so you might as well buy the cheaper Bosch sensor, since it's literally the same thing....and about $40 cheaper than the OEM one. (ESC was selling the OEM one for about $190) |

Good find! I have had one too many bad experiences with EBAY so I didn't even look there. But that is some good information!
