WARNING! Don't buy Bridgestone Potenza tires (apparently) - Not BMW Approved
So, I am trying to buy out my m3 lease.. company has been paying for lease, now I'm quitting and since the car only has 37k miles on it, I'm going to finance the rest (buyout is 37k, im the only driver)
About 6 months ago I put new tires on the car, BridgeStone Potenzas.. from TireRack (I selected BMW -> 2008 -> M3) and they showed up. I had Potenzas on my 2005 330 ZHP and loved them.. so I put them on the M3. Apparently they are not one of the 2 approved M3 tires (Michellin or Continental) so they aren't approving the sale. I was told even if I just say "nevermind deal is off" that I would still be held responsible for the cash for the tires, as well as being out $1500 for the Potenzas that have about 3k miles on them. I've never heard of this and I'm so irritated.. they want $1700 to put on "approved" tires and said "well just keep them and then when they wear out put them back on" I don't ever recall hearing about a rule where you have to return it with same tires.. I could understand runflat vs non runflat, or if I had some cheesy tire on there, but the Potenzas are Z rated and $300 each. Anyone ran into this before?

I always thought that it was just Conti or Michellin too... but my car was delivered (new at BMW Welt) with P-Zeros... weird.

I said there has to be someone who can override it, the tires are brand new, in good shape, correct sizes, correct speed rating, and a name brand tire. He said "3 inspectors need to sign off, and the rules are rules, so if any issues came up God Forbid, such as a crash BMW is liable" I can't believe I never heard of this before.. why would Bridgestone Potenza be ok for a 2005 bmw and not a 2008.. If I keep the car, I will need tires again in probably 2 years anyways, I'll just need to stack them up in the garage or something for 2 years.. right next to my stacked up R-comps..

They gave me a rental 328 while the car has been there (since Monday) and just dropped this on me today. The guy on the phone sounded pretty serious tho, I tried to harp on him pretty good about getting in touch with the service manager etc, he's in the lease retention department. So far the deal has been pretty easy going, they are buying the car, CPO inspecting it (2014 or 100k miles) and selling it back to me for same as buyout price..

Dude, my brother turned his 08' 550 Sport with Bridgestone RE050A's YESTERDAY, for his new 535 sport with ZERO issues about tires. That is total BS! If they ask, it was Vista BMW in Coconut Creek, Fl where he traded out of his lease .

That why right there. They can't CPO it without the correct tires.

Wait. Admittedly I have never actually exercised an end of lease purchase option, but the dealer would have nothing to do with the ownership process. It is, presumably, currently owned by BMW Financial (not the dealer). Your purchase option is with BMW Financial. Wouldn't it be as simple as dealing with BMW Financial - informing them of your desire to exercise the purchase option, send them a check, and you're done?
Or... perhaps you are arranging financing through your dealer? If that is the case, maybe they need to own it first and then finance the sale to you to make their balance sheet work correctly.

And yes they have said they are going to buy the car back, and then resell it to me.. I believe I am doing this in this fashion to get the available CPO warranty in which it has to be a BMW (or dealer) owned car first.. that's my understanding.

I would just tell them either they can bend you over for $1700 now and you will never buy another $70,000 BMW from them ever again or they can let it go and sell you the next 5 BMW's you will buy over the next 10-15 years.

I heard something similar regarding lease returns, but we returned an E46 vert 3~ years ago with a used $350 set of shit Nexen tires and they took it back without any questions.
I was under the impression they were supposed to mount new tires anyway when they CPO it. It would be ridiculous if the dealer sold a 3 year old leased car with 30k~ miles and only 25% tread left. tires are a consumable.

Guys its part of CPO program everything has to be oem on the car or it can't be CPO'd. If he was returning the to BMW financial they would charge you for tires so long as they were all matching and met the tread depth spec. The dealer must be charging you the cost of the CPO as well don't forget to factor that into the deal.
