Shipping Rims/Tires....
How come some people can ship their wheels and tires for like $100 across the country, and then I see people who pay close to $200
and then I run a FedEx quote.. and am being quoted a ridiculous amount of $270? I remember I shipped 4 tires (just tires) for $180 at UPS.. and it was a rip off but I didn't have time to drive to Fedex Do you guys just not insure it? or put a very low value amount? This has always baffled me...

if time is not of the essence, u can sometimes find a freighter to do an LTL shipment...depending on where u go, sometimes it can be cheaper and maybe if u drop it off at their warehouse...i once shipped 1/2 ton of tin (35 boxes) across the country for $150.
UPS and FEDex will always be more than a local freight company |

I heard that if you box them and not let UPS knows it's wheels with tires, they won't charge you an odd dimension price... not sure if this helps. maybe google for some answer?

Don't box them. Cardboard and heavy duty plastic wrap will do it. Will help keep the dimensions down a bit and actually works better for protection in my experience. I always found Fedex was less than UPS, too. Should be more than ~$200 excluding insurance for cross country distance.

I bought some rims and tires for my truck and got that via RL freight at $100. They have prices by the crate.
And then I sold the stock tires and sent it by UPS for $200. Your best bet as said is to contact a local freight company. |

I shipped two tires (no wheels) recently to Florida from Ca using FedEx ground. I zip-tied both tires. I believe the cost was around $65-$70. Pricy!

I put cardboard circles around the face/rear of each wheel and used industrial clear wrap around everything. Using my friend's FedEx account, it was $120 to ship from NJ to SC. Each one was ~50lbs.

You mean based on my picture above? You can just as easily put some blue painters tape on the face of the wheel and then put the carboard on that. As for tires getting punctured, I'd say that's pretty difficult. If I took a screwdriver and slamed it into the tire I probably couldn't even make a mark. Tires are pretty tough. If there was enough damage to puncture a tire at the shipping facility, you can bet there will be significantly more damage to the wheel/box. Put some insurance on it, and you'll be fine.

Because you're driving a 3000+ pound car over them.

FWIW,
I have had tires only shipped from Tire Rack via USPS to Germany (US APO address) for 70.00 for a set of four. They can take a couple of weeks to get there and arrive shrinkwrapped, but I have not had an issue with damage and the price is not too bad. The mail room guys get pissed though....

I've shipped wheels for as little as about $25 per wheel. In general, the cost driver for FedEx/UPS is size rather than weight. Typically their planes takeoff well below their max gross takeoff weight but the cargo holds are full.
So keeping the dimensions as low as possible is critical to containing shipping costs. I think you are always better off boxing them individually. I also like the idea of cardboard and plastic when shipping complete wheels and tires. That's how Tirerack does it and if it led to damage on a regular basis I doubt they'd use that method. |
