This sounds more and more doable as you guys keep giving me details and tips.

The one thing that I'm having a hard time imagining is where the bolts are located on the subframe. Can someone highlight the places where the bolts are located?

I am seeing 4 holes down each side, 3 in a row and one off to the side on the rear end. It will be pretty obvious when you are underneath looking at the bolt heads. I did it when I the rod bearings so I had the subframe down.

That should be right.. The yellow circles are the motor mount locations. The red circles are the subframe bolts. The second one down on each side are at an angle (i.e. not straight up - probably like 30deg).

Thanks!

S.

Just got a quote from Phaedrus in SF to do mine for $380, labor only. Purchased mounts from FCP. They said about 3 hours. Was surprised to receive such a reasonable quote. BMW of course quoted over $2k when they did their complementary check.

Old thread here but new response. Don't forget the alignment after. You drop the subframe to replace those. 2k? Jeezsch.

Engine mounts alone from an independent repair person should be under $500. if they take more than 3 hours to do this then you need to find a new person to work on your car.

on my car with the blower on I did this in under 2 hours, all you need to do is lift the engine a bit with a engine support or pole jack and just drop the screws on the subframe dont remove anything else besides the underpanel and support shield.

Correction, they quoted me wrong and said it would take about 4 hours. Also, some special tool? And said would cost $850. But they're also honest and said my mounts actually look ok and I could just leave them alone for now. I have just over 40k miles. I only took it in because BMW SF said the engine looked a little low and suggested the mounts to be replaced.
