Bay Area shops that can replace throttle actuator?

I just emailed Peter Pan BMW and they quoted me $1950 + tax to replace one throttle actuator. The parts can be found online for $550-$635 a piece. I'm thinking I can buy 2 of these and replace both at the same time. Has anyone in the Bay replaced these? How much and which shop? Recommend please! Thanks

Hello.

I just replaced my throttle actuators.
I got mine from FCP euro and they carry a warranty as long as you own the car.
I paid 485 a pice. That's 500 minus a 5% discount.

I did replace them myself and that is really not a difficult job at all. That is if you are a little handy and have the tools. No special tools required other then regular torx bits and ratchets and such.

Just look it up on YouTube. There are some videos on how to do it.

Never done it with cars... But I do build my own computers, so you think i should qualify to do it myself?

Well. No one can say if you can do it yourself.
Look at the videos online and decide if you could something like this.

If you never done it then it will be not as easy.
You will get frustrated at some points mainly because you are afraid to break something. Chances are you will break something. For example I broke one of the locks on the plug for bank two while I was removing the plug. I am not concerned about it because the plug sits pretty tight anyway and I could secure it more with a wire if I have to.
The dealerships also break things on your car but don't tell you. So it's not like they are perfect.

There are a few tight spots and it depends on how big your hands are to get in there. Most likely you will get some kind of cuts and scratches before you are done.

What you get out of it is you learn quite a bit of your ride. in addition you can tackle other things that will be similar because of this experience. Like changing the fuel breather valve, that's for the most part the same procedure.

When I ordered mine from fcp, I put them in the shopping cart and left them there. I did not check out. A few days later I got a mail offering 5% off of I still want the items.
Maybe worth a try.

The best would be you team up with someone in your area who did something like this before.
My biggest concern was to get the air box of and on again.
Turned out to be not difficult at all.
The most annoying thing was to disconnect the wire harness to lift it up to get the actuators out.

All in, not bad at all.
Most of us do this kind of stuff for a long time and we all have in common that we made mistakes along the way. We did break things, sometimes a costly experience.
With the age of the Internet it became a lot easier to start because some people a willing to share their experience for our benefit.

Good point. I'm pretty much set to do it myself.
Peterpan BMW in Millbrae is charging $1200 flat rate for the work and parts not included in the price.

I had my throttle actuators repaired under warranty at Peter Pan. I did ask their rates and was very surprised how expensive it was.

Yah, too bad i'm not under warranty.

Would anyone of you pay $800 for labor to install these?

The labor rate in San Francisco is probably close to $250-$300 per hour or more.

PerformanceTechnic in Fremont will take care of it. Great place.

They are easy, but I can also see how one would not want to mess with it.

A mechanic that knows what he is doing could easily swap both actuators in 45 minutes or so.

I'd say it'd take more than that if you do it right. You have to take out the airbox, the intake manifold etc.

45 minutes, you'd be ripping it all out in record time and I'd be afraid such a rush job would miss having some of the hose clamps not tightened or the airbox not sealed etc.

I'd say an experienced mechanic doing a good job would be 2 hours. And double that for someone doing it at home with hand tools.

I did this on my M3 about a month ago. Took me just over an hour to do everything. The airbox and plenum can be off the car in 10 minutes tops. Its a few bolts, 8 hose clamps, and a few sensors to unplug. This was following the DIY here on the forum, if I had to do it again I could easily shave time off of how long it took me.

People think its a hard job and dealers rape people on the cost to do it. If someone local needed it done I would do it all day for $150 plus parts. (I am not in Cali)

For a shop, that is not an outrageous price. That being said, i wouldnt pay that. I manage a shop in SF and would have to charge around that price if i had my techs do the work. I do sidework for my friends and some local bmw guys, PM me if you want a quote to replace the TA's.

I ordered from FCP Euro and did it myself a couple months ago. I used this guide, which was extremely helpful:

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=735033

Took my time, and did it in about 3 hours. Was a bit nervous at first, but its really not too bad. The cost savings plus satisfaction of doing it myself was worth it

Get your actuators from www. m p o w e r motorsports.org/ (had to space the lettering because they aren't a forum sponsor) and perform the job yourself. Thank me later.

If you still feel incompetent in doing it yourself, order the actuators and take it to Performance Technic's or VT Motorworks.

Had mine done at Elite Performance, right behind Peter Pan in Millbrae. Ask for Gary or Eric! They are familiar with the process and are very reasonable.

I had ordered mine from getbmwparts, but a few of my friends went with FCP (which I would also recommend doing instead).

They actually are a sponsor Abdul@mpowermotorsports is the name of the company. Either FCP Euro or Abdul are both good choices to pick up the TA's. Both with lifetime warranties. OP, this is definitely a DIY you can do yourself. Abdul will help walk you through it.

+1 rec for Elite Performance and Performance Technic. Have met a bunch of the Elite Performance folks at tracks and P-Tech does nearly all of the work on my car.
