While restoring the 262’s airframe has certainly been a challenge, the project’s*achilles heal has always been the ability to source and restore a pair of original Junker Jumo 004B jet engines to power her. We have to remember that the jet engine was in its infancy during WWII. The technology, while advanced for its time, was incredibly crude by modern standards. Added to this, the German supply chain for materials with appropriate metallurgical properties for jet engines was also under immense strain during their manufacture in 1944/45. As a consequence, German jet engines had a very short life span between major overhaul, reportedly just 10 to 25 operational hours, which means rebuildable core engines are exceedingly rare. Restoring and certifying original Jumo 004 engines to airworthy condition is therefore immensely complex, not to mention expensive. But given Paul Allen’s dedication to the project, this hurdle has also been overcome.*Aero Turbine*in Stockton, California is the company in charge of restoring the Me 262’s Jumos. They ran one for the first time in February, 2015, probably the first time any Jumo 004 variant has generated power since 1951 when Czechoslovakia retired their Avia S-92s (Czech-built Me 262s). The first fully certified Jumo 004B arrived for installation at Morgan Aircraft about two months ago, and it is now mounted to the 262’s starboard wing.

A masterpiece of German engineering and the propulsion engines.
Hadnt changed the end of war for us but the future of jetengined aircrafts.

The jet engine is a British invention.

Without Googling, isn't there some debate about this?

Pretty cool. The WWII era was an awesome time for aviation (I think).

I wonder how long before particular ideologues brand him a facist for his choice in restoration, though.

I know a lot of Germans Dang3r included who believe the US made tremendous advances in aviation bc we stole their scientists, simply not true.

Before WW2 the US still dominated the world in aviation!

You hadnt stole our scientists, thats nonsense. Few of them move to the US and developed inventions further. Thats leads also afterwards to your enormous advances into aviation.
Btw. your shown DC-3 has its first flight in '33 the JU52 in '32. After war Germany was not allowed to build own aircrafts so we had to deal with the stuff the market offers
The Wrights had made the first valid engine supported flight, I dont complain about that, but Otto von Lilienthal lost his life by the very first attempt to fly with the glider and this was earlier. His invention leads to the first tries to build a wing and the Wrights had participating from this.

The ju52 was no competition to the DC-3.
Almost every major airline in the 30's flew DC3's.

The DC-3 has a cruise speed of 150kts vs the Ju52 114 kts

The DC-3 has a gross weight of around 25,000lbs vs Ju52 gross weight of around 20,000lbs, seats 20 to 30 passengers vs 17 passengers.

I'd assume the DC3 did better on fuel too since it has 2 engines vs 3. DC-3's are still flown today in parts of South America, Africa.

My point was even before ww2 the US did pretty good!

So we've gone from a post about an astonishing and unique restoration to flight status of a real 262 to a childish 'top trumps willy waving' contest

believe at some point BMW jet engines were used in this wolf

and there were great scientists on all sides researching cutting-edge and fringe tech
keep in mind due to the policies of the Nazis, many German scientists had already left prior to hostilities starting in WW2.. Einstein being one

Einstein was a jew and into 3rd Reich they'd arrested and killed jews, no matter what. Had also lead to torn the "Comedian Harmonists" apart, but thats another story.

Only some of the first batch of test and trails aircraft, when they were testing between the BMW and the Junkers engines.

Junkers were able to develop their engine better, with more thrust and slightly better reliability and tbo and as such almost all the production built aircraft used the Junkers Jumo engines.
