what is the expected life span for the evaporator?
just had to get ac compressor and receiver drier filter replaced
my car is '08 with 67k miles
Changing the evaporator is a very labor intensive bear of a job, I'm not surprised at the high estimate. My 08' requires yearly recharging, until I have to start recharging it monthly i wouldn't attempt it.
I've never heard of this potential repair... anyone care to enlighten me on what to watch out for? I'm an 09 with~107K... don't want to get Fd with a $5K bill that doesn't involve something fun.
If your ac stops blowing cold and your compressor's running most likely (unless your compressor isnt pumping or you have a blockage) your ac system has lost its r134a charge. The bandaid is a recharge which you'll see advertised at every quicklube for a reasonable price, they typically charge a low labor rate plus materials which is gas (r134a) charged by quantity, it's typically weighed in and it's probably about 1.5lbs on an e9x. The common leak points are the condenser (heat exchanger which exchanges the heat from the compressed gas which is liquid after its compressed) or the evaporator which is on the low side or the refrigeration process ( think when then liquid goes from a small hole to a large hole you get a massive pressure drop which causes the liquid to become a gas again and thus drops in temperature)

The proper repair is to fix whatever is leaking, evaporator or condenser.

The condenser is accessible and is where your radiator lives which also makes it subject to things flying at it and puncturing it, which can cause a leak.

But most likely if it's a slow leak which takes several months to bleed out, your evaporator is leaking from poor manufacturing processes or joints.

The quick fix is a simple recharge, if you can set yourself up with a recharging rig and can properly evacuate your sealed system from impurities (air) and recharge you can get some solid life out of it.

The expensive fix is pulling out your dash to replace your evaporator and trust who ever does it properly does it and evacuates and recharges your system after.

$5k is steep but most likely the tech who bid it doesn't want to do the job so figures if he doesn't go ahead, I don't have to do it and if he does great I get paid... I know a dealership bid this but still.. he doesn't want to do it.
Dealer reduced price to $3500. Comes with 2 year unlimited warranty. I called BMW NA and they were very pleasant. Pleasantly told me to kick rocks.

I pulled the trigger. The dealership is about as good as they come FWIW. They are having a big grand opening party in June so a truck load of my friends and I are going to eat $2000 worth of food and test drive some BMWs.

I asked them not to rush on my M3, and I will take good care of their 11 mile old 540i loaner which is so damn comfortable to drive it has me wondering why I drive a 2010.

I sold my house so had some money to cover this. Otherwise I would risk many hours in the garage being bothered by my 3 year old and wife doing this myself....priceless.

Yep Timujin , that's more reasonable. It's nice to have things fixed correctly too plus with a new evaporator you shouldn't get smelly AC anytime soon..

I gave it a nice wash and wax for Cars & Coffee in the morning.

Washed the body with Meguiar's Gold Class in a pressure washer soap container, dried it using my DeWalt mini blower, then used Meguiar's Quik Wax as a spray wax to wax the car after the wash.

My alternator is on its way out, blew out my rears in Texas on the way back from NJ. Towed, tires replaced, broke down twice on the way home but made it

10% off, extra $50 for opening a credit account with 9 months deferred @ discount. Extremely good experience with them, watched the entire process.

Picked up one of these, will run car until I get another battery discharge warning then replace alternator myself after verifying codes.

Does it hurt your credit any buy doing this, paying it off and closing the account?

Anytime you open or close a new line of credit it will have an impact on your credit score. Usually opening and closing in a short period of time will be a negative hit. If you open one, pay it off but then don't necessarily close it until you have to - like a yeah or two - you should be fine.

They didn't extend too much credit to me about $2000. Ill leave it open and likely will continue to use them in the future.

I watched the rain bead off the freshly sealed paint. First time using Chemical Guys Jet Seal. Applied nicely. Hope to top it with some wax tomorrow after a quick wash.

Let the jet seal dry for a full day or two, this way it cures to the paint properly. I've never heard of waxing after sealing, I always assumed sealing was its own form of protection, what's your thinking on that?

I've heard and read about the combined protection from stacking a sealant and then a wax, after it cures. I think it's pretty standard practice... but open to expert advice.

Yup many people top their sealant with a wax for extra gloss and protection. I used to top my menzerna power loc with auto finesse illusions. The amount of shine was beyond amazing

I have read that once you seal a car, you can wax over top of it for further protection. I used to do that with my Klasse sealant too. Worth a try I guess.

Seems to look good too!!

I've been planning on trying Obsessed Garage's method of waxing over a sealant. Check out the videos, I'm pretty sure he discusses his logic. It's been a few weeks since I watched.

To the above(s) you can absolutely top sealants with a wax - and should do so in that order

- Clean & correct if necessary

- Apply sealant and follow instructions on dry times

- You can then apply a 2nd coat of sealant or a first layer of wax.

- Then periodic or routine spray wax or spray sealant applications each time you maintenance wash & dry your car
