We actually have it listed as a rule in our school handbook that if we say gay in a phrase like that we get demerits. I don't know of a single case where it was enforced though in my 3 years of school there. I think it's one of those rules they have to look good/look like they're trying to be anti-discriminating to parents but don't actually care about the rule.

I am so not PC that although I almost deleted this before posting, I couldn't bring myself to delete.

Edit: What really needs to happen is to throw the politically correct bums out of public office and out of the public school system. We need to teach kids that they do not need to succumb to the pressure of the left to accept that which is unacceptable (meaning behavior). We do need to offer help to people who will accept it. People who are afflicted with homosexuality do not need to be it. Just as an alcoholic can get off the alcohol.
