Question 2010 CIC not support iPhone7 music via USB cable?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 2010 E92 M3. My car has USB port next to AUX port in the central armrest. However, when I connect my iPhone7 with the car through this USB port, under idrive CD/MULTIMEDIA-EXTERNAL DEVICE, it shows 'not supported'. I know combox or tune2air may solve the problem, I just want to know why this in-built USB audio function not working on the iphone7.

I don`t have an older phone or iPod to try if older system can be recognized, tried to search for this problem but not found a very clear answer. Has anyone got same issue and know the answer?

Cheers,
Eric

newer OS does use a different file format compared to the old one back then which could be a reason its not able to read it

Your 2010 needs an iPhone y-cable to use it that way, it's just a MULF + TCU setup in your car.

Late 2011-2013 can use just the lightning cable because of the Combox.

So if I get combox fitted, USB would work? Otherwise for now I need a Y cable? From bmw or ebay? Thanks mate

Correct on all counts.

I just use a y-cable I purchased from Amazon in my 328. Works just fine. I noticed the BMW ones are super expensive and they fray internally in about 6-8 months.
