iPod Touch owners...

...any Do's and Don't's? Just bought an 8GB Touch to replace my 8GB iPod. Want to be able to take it with me to meetings to check email (wifi everywhere on campus). Is the sound quality just as good as with the standard iPod?

So what does jailbreaking it get me? I know it allows you to change themes and such, but I don't GAF what the theme is. Simpler the better. What apps can you run after jailbreaking it that you can't run before?

You can multitask, trick your apps into always thinking they are on wireless, get 5 icon dock, 5 icon rows, 5 icon columns (this may sound trivial but it's very worth it), openSSH, and I've only been jailbroken for a couple weeks now. Plus you can always restore it to factory just be sure to back up your stuff because that will delete it all

Fwiw I'm running the Glasklart theme...very simple and elegant

The best part of jailbreaking is if you get installous you can get pretty much all the apps for free. I think that is what I do with it the most.

BTM, I am using Glasklart Alt Invisible....(cant read the rest lol) plus, Black Sliders, Metallic Glass, Apple Glass Battery, and Glasklart Icons all on at once. I've found that to be a pretty sweet combination.

i would have opted for 32GB its only $100 more, its new hardware, as the 8GB is not and 4x times the space its technically the 2ng gen touch. i dont think the new ios4 will work on that model

Its pretty easy. I just got Blackra1n and downloaded it to my computer and then you run the program and hook up your ipod and it does it all for you. There are a few things you download after from Cydia, which is what blackra1n loads to your ipod. From cydia you can get different themes and shit. But the main thing to get from cydia is Installous, Winterboard, and what BTM said, the 5 icon tray, column, rows etc. Then you can use installous to get apps, and winterboard controls themes. Another cool thing is SBSettings which allows you to do more custom settings, but I got it to hide icons I dont use.

There are a few sources you have to add to cydia, but if you do a google search for jailbreak ipod touch, there are pretty good guides how to do it and what sources to download.

i still havent figured out how to download apps that cost money! i jailbroke my itouch too and have cydia and winterboard on it and have a sick theme to it. but how do i download apps that cost money, for free? =(

I haven't been able to either but haven't really attempted it yet, SpaceE92 recommends installous, I'm pretty sure it's free in cydia but again wifi in my house sucks so I usually reserve tinkering for work

yeah i use installous. you can get pretty much all the apps free.. you just have to find the source and put that into cydia.. I think its Hackulous or something..

You mentioned you were on glasklart as well, have you successfully SSHed glasklart icons in that otherwise show as the normal ones? If so I've been having trouble with this but unfortunately all that is on my work computer

I was borderline on even buying this one. I have an iPod Nano and like it and thought having a handy wifi device for email during meetings and such would be cool. Certainly not necessary, but maybe fun to play with. Wifey can have the Nano. I had $75 in Amazon gift certs, so this was right around $100 out of pocket. I didn't care about it enough to spend twice that.

That said, I may learn to really like it, in which case I'll use future gift certs to upgrade.

Do you have Glassklart Icons checked? I think it also depends on the order that your themes are in. I may be wrong though. But the order of the themes I have checked currently are Glassklart Alt Invisible, Black Sliders, Metallic Glass, Apple Glass Battery, Glassklart Icons.

I think there is another Glassklart icon pack that where you can get pretty much all of the icons clear. I just unchecked the Glassklart Icon theme, and it went back to the normal icons, but when i rechecked it, everything was back to black and white/clear.

Yea my theme is Glasklart icon with alt dock. Most icons change, but there are few important ones that don't. I was able to find a thread of people making icons for the theme, that you supposedly just openSSH into your phone with the same filename.png and it replaces it with the glasklart, but in my limited tinkering I could not get it to work.

For example do you have Wall Street Journal?

Yeah, i just downloaded it and your right, its the normal icon. I havent really gotten into the SSH yet. But I have figured out how to get torrents to download to the touch haha

A lot of the icons are normal i just noticed, i just put the clear ones in the front haha.. But i think they are always adding/releasing additional icon packs

EDIT: I just opened Cydia and it is updating my Glassklart Icon pack..try and find the one that says 6100+ icons or something.
