Stripped oil pan

Went into Schomp Bmw today for an oil change and they told me bolt on the oil pan is stripped and won't go back on. I was quoted $1640 if it can be repaired and $3464 if the pan needs to be replaced.. Does anyone have experience with this? Any other alternatives?

There are many theads on this. Do an advanced search for stripped or pan in title only. Here is one I found for you...

Time cert is what you need and is a permanent repair. Most shops can do this for you.

its definitely not a $1,600 job for a repair. don't go to that guy, he's nuts. indy shops charge a couple hundred bucks for a fix plus new oil/etc..

$1600 would be a day of expensive big city labor to remove pan, helicoil or keene sert, and reinstall with fresh oil and filter. You can fix it on the car instead for a fraction of that price.

That is what I thought when the service advisor gave me the quote. They wanted to charge me for 9 hrs of labor... He said the engine would have to be removed

As mentioned earlier that price suggests they are removing the pan. Installing a timesert with the pan in place can be done, but can be installed incorrectly (happened to me). Because of the crush washer, it is critical that it installed square to the existing hole. Otherwise issues can arise. If you've been thinking of doing the rod bearings, this would be a good opportunity as removing the pan is about 1/2 of the job.

If you're going to have it repaired in place, try finding a shop that specializes in spark plug thread repair. I regret not going to the one near me.

I will be calling around tomorrow to find a shop to install the timesert. Could you link me to the correct one so I can purchase it? As for the rod bearings, I may wait until a later time to do them as I am only at 25k miles.

he is completely ignorant. the motor absolutely does NOT need to be removed.

even with a complete oil pan replacement, they have to move the subframe. that is why labor is so high. it can be repaired, just find a confident and competent shop in your area.
