Is this the worst Jerez black paint match ever?

Friend of mine paid top dollar for a perfect paint job at a BMW approved bodyshop this week. (£1150 UK or $1800 USD)

He told them he would pay whatever it takes to get the hood and bumper in as new condition.

The body shop told him they would strip the hood back to metal and start from scratch. Remove and paint the bumper and fade into the top of the fenders.

The paint on the hood is now 360 microns thick. A freshly painted bonnet should have paint around 150 microns

The new paint has a lot of sparkly silver in the pearlescent paint. The original has hardly any.

Worst still, look at the paint match. I didn't realise JZB was actually purple.

Anyone seen a worse paint match?

Sorry no name and shame unless they don't rectify the problem.

The bodyshop owner has said he will try to blend it into the other panels next week, but I think it needs a completely new paint finish.

Comments welcome

Try this one and see if you still can't see a difference. The fender and hood are purple. The pillar and door are almost black with a slight touch of blue.

Same thing I was thinking. I can't believe a body shop would allow a car (ANY CAR) to leave their shop in those conditions. That says enough about them right there.

Wow! That's the worst color match I've seen on any car, much less on a premium car like an M3. The body shop needs to either make it right or they shouldn't be paid for that poor paint job. If you friend paid by credit card, he might want to consider filing a charge back on the card with his bank until the body shop makes things right. By the way, blending into other body panels is a bad idea for correcting the bad color match. All that will do is spread the problem over a larger area. The panels that were painted poorly need to be stripped and repainted correctly, also ensuring correct paint thickness. I wish your friend luck in getting the problem corrected. He's going to need it!

To be fair, the colour match doesn't look too bad when it's in the shade, but when the sun shines it looks like Deep Purple album cover.

Don't forgot this is an Approved BMW main dealer body shop.

I think the only course of action is to strip it right back to metal and start again. Hell, I can even see witness marks of the old stone chips in the paint. Not bad for $1800

Im not sure what your obesession with stripping down to metal is, but I can almost guarantee you that, that was never done, nor should it have been. You don't need to strip down to metal to get a proper paint job or paint match. I wouldn't go back to that body shop at all, thats a joke.

There is suppose to be a hint of purple in JzB though. I notice my car is that shade of purple under certain light. But in those photo's they don't match at all.

At 360 microns the paint needs stripping back to metal and priming properly. Any more than 200 microns will sink over time.

Trouble is, I think the Guy sounds like he will just go over it again or just fade into the pillar and door.

I can't believe that BMW can use such an outfit. My friend specifically asked for a first class job with no expense spared. The body shop owner said if my friend wasn't happy he would do it again. He also said that the colour match would be perfect because they use the genuine BMW Glasurit paint.

Now things are turning sour the guy is saying 'what do you expect on a 2 year old car?'. Bring it back and I will fade into the adjacent panels. WTF? the paint is a completely different colour!

It would have been a lot easier if the bill was paid on credit card, but he paid by cheque. (The weather was dull when he picked it up)

What do you mean the paint will "sink"?

Here is a shot of the difference in the sparkly content of the pearlescent paint. Taken with flash in dull lighting conditions.

Both panels on the left are the new paint, right is the original paint
