Weird Engine noises , is it worth it ?
Hi All,
I am located in israel , where E92 M3's are very rare. there is now one for sale which is very well kept after but high mileage. the owner doesn't seem to be really a car guy and it was an "m3 taxi" for his uses. the car is an 2008 with 68,000 Miles. DCT trans. when cold starting it : 1) the valve train rattled , like there is no oil reaching the lifters. it didnt stop on its own until i gave it a little throttle than it quieted down 2) the engine vibrates at ~2,000 RPM when idle. if i keep the throttle steady at this point it continues to vibrate. i dont know those cars , are those signs of a problem ? |

Okay! Our car's tend to sound like diesel engine's, anyway!
However these sounds that you described could indicate worn engine and motor mounts aswell as an rod bearing issue, wich could lead to an motor replacement, depending on the range of destruction. However it's very hard to help you without any visual evidence! Any light's visible in the cluster? What I mean is, did the car threw any code's? Best bet if so, do an OBD2 scan! That way it's also easier for us to pin point your car related issues. That mean's, go out make a nice mobile phone vid, load it up on youtube, copy that link from youtube and paste it in here. We would all love to help you but without a video, it is really very hard. Last edited by vsix; 11-19-2015 at 04:31 AM.. Reason: d |

No codes on the car and also none probalby on the OBD as the car has been to pre-sale inspection recently and they do an OBD scan.
what they did say is that there is compression differences between cylinders. i think most were 20.8 or so and highes 22.1 or so (not 100% certain). ' i will take it to a BMW shop in any case to do full scan |

The vibration you're experiencing could be a number of things (engine mounts for example, could be worn out) Best bet, take it to the local BMW expert/specialist if you want to pursue further.

A quick not on engine mounts.
Quite common to have the fail after 50-60k miles. Tons of threads about it, etc. They don't bust in two violently, but they split and start leaking. Had mine replaced at roughly 50k miles, one of them fell into two pieces when they pulled it out. If I were to guess, anyone at 80k+ miles who has not had theirs replaced will be in for a surprise when they do them. |
