I wonder if these guys would install non-oem bearings and rod bolts if we bring them? My plan was to use the new clevite bearings with the ARP rod bolts (still going back and forth on oem bolts vs ARP). I'm sure they would drop their pricing by a couple hundred as well, but then it becomes a matter of if they would even warranty it since it's not OEM (some shop in Austin won't warranty unless it's OEM).

Also, is this the same M-Power you guys are referring to? http://www.yelp.com/biz/mpower-auto-specialist-houston

I've been by to see Ned/Ted for something small, but tbh I've been to Alex @ ABR and I would prefer to take my car there. Alex runs a nice clean shop to make the overall experience more comfortable for the cars and people. I can sleep easy knowing that ABR is going to take the time and care for my M3

Installing S/C kits is bolt on simplicity. Doing rod bearings is a much different job. I have personally watched Alex build stroker motors from a bare block.

I havent even asked about a warranty for the work.....but i did ask about non OEM parts. Alex and i discussed the various versions of the stock bearings (stock, VAC coated, and other coatings) and rod bolts; he was willing to install whatever i wanted.

I told him i had not intentions to ever supercharge the car so we both agreed stock rod bolts and VAC coated bearings would be best. He did call me back and quoted $2100 for the job with parts i just mentioned with about a 3 day turnaround time. I already have an appointment to bring the car to him........

Seems like a lot of you having the bearings replaced. Are these '08, '09 cars that had known issues or newer? My '11 has no symptoms.

Wanted to update this thread and give a review of my experience with alex and the guys at ABR in houston.

I typically do all of my own work as i am a machinist by trade but thought this rod bearing replacement was worth letting an experienced shop take on.

I am always very nervous letting anyone work on anything i have but these guys and alex answered all of my questions up front that gave me sense of their knowledge.

Pretty simple….they got my car on the day it was scheduled and got back to me exactly when they said they would……crystal clear communication and cheaper than anyone else would have done it.

I just drove the car 100 miles back home and it sounds fine…..obviously time will tell. BTW………keep an eye on your oil reports as the analysis saved my engine.

I will get some photos of the bad bearings up in a few minutes

A little history.......if you read the blackstone report you could gather what the situation is.

I bought the car from a lot in Houston (texas direct auto). Very clean inside and out...and it had two previous owners, one in austin and one in houston.

45k miles, I bought the car and put about 1500 miles on it then sent the oil in for analysis.

When i get the photos re-sized you will see it was well worth the money to get these replaced.

I'd like to read it. Have you posted it somewhere?

The situation exists across all model years, not just 08 and 09. There are also instances where the owner has no symptoms and the engine still lets go.

YES, been there many times lol. Just go read yelp review's all the good ones are his un educated employees.

Do it right the first time go to ABR. They only hire BMW techs with 5+ years Experience. O and Alex won't tell you to "get your piece of shit and get out my shop when you call him out on half ass work"

I wouldn't recommend M Power. Their shop is packed with tons of cars literally inches from each other, all being "worked on", which partially includes his racerboy fanclub pawing at the vehicles. He will lie about what is required to do a job and generally has a bad attitude. When I asked for the credentials of his mechanics with BMWs, and M3s in particular, they wouldn't divulge any details except "trust us man, we know what we doin'". Yeah, no thanks.

That included everything.....gaskets, o-rings, rod bolts, bearings, oil+filter, and two new lower engine mounts.

OEM bearings and bolts? Wondering if we can pay more to get WPC treated or the new Clevite bearings once they are released.

If you guys were on a lower mileage car and under an extended warranty (with plenty of time left) would you still have the bearings replaced? Shopping for cars right now and I had thought to buy an extended warranty through USAA for the piece of mind (bearing issues and otherwise). I will check my oil at least.

Any updates on yall that have went to ABR for rod bearing work? Curious what you ended up choosing especially now that there are more choices (BE Bearings for example).

Also, any more comments about ABR?

Im taking my 09 M3 with 56k miles to ABR Houston this Wednesday for rod bearing replacement. Im doing ARP bolts and VAC coated bearings with all the other necessary items for the install. I was quoted 3k. Alex said it should be done by Friday. I've heard good things about him so I thought I'll give it a chance.

I wouldn't go to Ted at M power. Last time they did an oil change there, they just jacked up the car on one side to drain the oil. They never replaced the crush washers for the oil drain plugs or the gaskets for the oil filter. Then when I did my own oil change, I found out both of the alan head on the drain plugs were striped. The shop looks crowed and dirty. M power has cheap pricing but not good quality work. They quoted me 2k for the bearing upgrade but after what I saw, nope.
