Anybody go for a K40 (RL360) dealer installed radar?
Just ordered my M3 Vert today ... very psyched. Should be here after all this godforsaken snow we've gotten (more 65") is gone.
Of course, the dealer tried to upsell everything from nitrogin filled tires to paint protection to mats. One thing that did intrigue me was the dealer installed radar detector. It's a K40 (which I never heard of). And it ain't cheap (2K). But I like the idea of it being out of sight. Anyone have any experience with this ... good or bad? thanks |

Not sure about a vert, but in a coupe u can hardwire a valentine1 pretty easily and tuck it behind the rearview mirror. I also use a remote display so my car doesn't light up like a christmas tree at night. Its all hidden pretty well and extremely easy to do yourself.

Don't do it! A V1 and Laser Intercepter quad is a much better system for radar/laser countermeasures. Or if you drive in VA, substitute an Escort Redline or Bel STI driver for the V1. You could also get an Escort 9500ci (if they install it for you) for both radar and laser but the laser countermeasures won't perform as well as the Laser Interceptor.
Cheers.

I had a K40 in my old S2000, and it cost about $750 (900 installed) for front/rear radar and a front laser diffuser... so $2k sounds way overpriced to me
I sold the K40 and got a V1 a few months later - it's a much better detector IMHO

K40 makes the worst detectors ever made. A V1 or a 9500ci will give you much better protection

K40's seem overpriced for what you get. I'd rather spend the $ on an Escort or Valentine and with the amount saved get a clear bra -for the car not the wife!

Yup, stay away from K40. It's a well known name which is why they cost so much, but it isn't as effective as a V1 and Laser Interceptor combination.

Had a K40 in my G35 when I bought it in '03. Loved it! Worked extremely well. I could control the volume and the best thing was you couldnt see the device.

its convenient because of the install, but i only like there diffuser it is a newer design than the previous, but yea their radar detectors are not good. If you want convience you can get the new Escort Solo S3 cordless detector. I just got it and it out performs my old S2 by alot. It even is very close to the performance of those other great corded detectors w the convience of cordless operation.

K40 RL360
For an installed radar I would definately go with the K40 RL360 radar detector, it is the best radar on the market and the only radar that can be customized to the BMW's that have a radar based accessories and other radar will consistantly go off. For a portable radar I would check out the V1 or K40's new RL100 two pretty good for the cost. The RL100 has GPS and the V1 does not.

I like my built in K40. I have a several year old model. It is FAR superior to the 9500 Escort built in, IMO. I NEED front and back radar detection here in Jersey. The K40 has it, the Escort does not. Of course, the V1 or windshield Escort does. But, these are not stealth. Mine is really uber cool built in...... Done privately btw.

I would love to see evidence of this. The only places I can find such evidence is, just like the videos you link to, from K40 themselves. Linky please because google doesn't find one for me.
What does this mean?

Your opinion is based on ... what?
Quote:
How do you define stealth? Is it hidden away? Because the Escort 9500ci and Qi45 can be just as hidden as any K40. Or do you define stealth as the ability to avoid detection by the Spectre RDD? Because the K40 can most definitely be picked up by the Spectre and is not at all stealthy in this respect. The only detectors that are immune to the Spectre are the Escort 9500ci, Escort Redline, Beltronics STI Driver and Beltronics STI-R (which is no longer available). Not trying to nitpick, but your post is perilously close to misinformation and that is really a big disservice to the board members here. Cheers.

Ersin,
Does Escort know you are blogging during working hours?????? Dude relax this is a forum for people to express there opinions. Why dont you google the K40 RL360 and you will see everybody loves this new radar. What they mean by stealth is that is can not be visually seen inside ths car until it goes off, the escort 9500ci has both a display and control head thats needs to be in reach and seen by the driver hense it not being fully stealth. Secondly Anybody who is anybody knows that K40 is the only mfg to be able to offer a remote radar that comes with both a radar reciever in the front and in the rear, Escort doe snot have that, does that mean they cant pick up from the rear no but it is extremely limited. The K40 RL360 is definately the most versitle radar on the market there are a lot of things it can do that the escort can not and dont ask me to explain simply look it up yourself of call them. marysm3,
Opinions are one thing but a claim that the K40 RL360 is "the best radar on the market" has to be backed up. This forum is not just a place for opinions. People come here for information. Not misinformation. In isolation, every owner believes his or her detector is the best. But how many of them have truly tested them against the radar and laser guns that LEOs use? And how many of them, further still, compare them head to head against the other detectors? Well, I have with the help of others. It's not my life, just a hobby. But after a few times meeting with people who do this it becomes pretty clear what works and what doesn't. Besides, there's plenty of good information on the Internet. Check out the Veil guy's blog or radardetectors.net forum. The only type of comparison I can find on the Internet of any K40 detector is from Craig Peterson. He's hardly what I would call "unbiased". He truly is an Escort "blogger". (And if I were blogging, it wouldn't be for Escort because I'm a Valentine-1 Zombie!) But even next to the non-Escort products he reviews with it, the K40 gets low marks. I'm happy that you're satisfied with your K40. But if you claim it's the best on the market you have to qualify and prove that. Cheers. P.S. 12:43 AM is not working hours for me.
