Anyone have this happen to them?..BSD

So saw a soft code for 0278D, a Alternator communication error. Good news is am seeing no low battery errors and alternator appears to be charging fine.

Went to the back to check the battery connection area and found this. Blue connector looks like the BSD plug...and it appears to have broken off (you can see the jagged edge of the end of the connector). Funny thing is I can't see where the other broken wire is located. I'm assuming it's in the wire loom somewhere all wrapped up in the wire tie?

Anyone have this happen to them before? I believe this is a simple fix, but will require getting a replacement connector and pin set and then reattaching new pins and housing? Funny thing is I'm not getting any other errors other than the Alternator communication error. I thought that the BSD controls oil sensor condition & oil level, etc?....but looks like those functions work fine.

I don't think it plugs in anywhere. I had the same exact code like you. I cleared it but it came back, I had to replace my Alternator and then the code was gone for good.

I bought my alternator from RockAuto (VALEO which is the supplier for BMW) for $245usd all in. No core charge.

Thanks, I've read the same thing regarding the code, so replacing the alternator is the likely scenario.

But for a sanity check, do you mind checking your battery area and to see if you have a blue connector that leads to nowhere? There are 2 blue connectors coming off your IBS (negative terminal). One plugs into the Positive terminal and the other one (BSD connector) is the one in question.

Agreed with Gary, I can confirm that this connector is on almost all E9x ms - Ive read on here before that it is used by BMW to power up the car when in the showroom without a battery or something.

Some search also giving up that it is used for the battery not to discharge when in transport.

That blue connector in the first post is part of the BSD communication network. It is critical to proper function of the car. It has nothing to do with showrooms or discharging etc. More than you want to know can be found here:

The BSD faults can be traced to any of that data network's components- Alternator, IBS, oil sender, wiring, etc. ISTA-D has test modules to trace faults. You can guess at it and throw parts at it but best to do a proper diagnostics session.

Thanks Deansbimmer....where is the other end of the receptacle. Is it buried in my wire loom somewhere? Would like to confirm before I start unbuckling the cable ties and looking for it.

My brother in laws e90 m3 had the same code last year. I checked the voltage while the car was running on multiple occasions and it appeared his alternator was only working intermittently battery was also very drained. Replaced his alternator with an oem Valeo and problem fixed.

I just broke the BSD sensor connector as well. Someone pointed me to part number 61116911072 (which is a clutch adapter cable) but it appears to use the same Molex connector.

I'll have to splice it back together - must have been brittle with age.
