CDV; 1st to 2nd is a problem

Yes after three M3 with the SMG and DCT I decided to go with a manual. Mistake. (production date is 5-11) 1st to 2nd driving normal is very notch(ie) with all the other shifts nice a fluid; when "getting" on it won't go into 2nd thus blowing the shift and when it does it takes a lot force to get it into 2nd.

I'm not a complete novice using a manual and understand practice helps, but this is terrible

Is it missing transmission fluid or something crazy like that?? Maybe something is wrong with the 2nd gear? Does it feel "notchie" going from 3rd down to 2nd as well?

There's no CDV in the M3's clutch.

Are you still breaking the car in? It gets better (at least it did for me) after the 1200 mile service and the change of my trans fluid.

I thought the M cars don't have a CDV?

I go for the service next week. Can new fluid make that much of a difference?

I would say yes and the combination of everything wearing in and getting a bit looser. Still this tranny is never going to feel like a Honda, etc. It is not super smooth unfortunately.

They don't...I think there is a dummy(it looks like one but is empty inside) CDV in our cars

Try not to force it. Finesse it instead. It will get a bit smoother as time goes on but will never be the smoothest shift. Just work it at the pace it wants to go rather than trying to make it really fast and it should be at least somewhat satisfying. Also, shifting at higher revs seems to make it a little bit better. Good luck.

Cheers.

Make sure you still have the clutch pedal on the floor when you are actually putting the trans into 2nd gear. I am willing to bet anything you are letting the clutch while still pulling back on the stick.

There is NO cdv. OP is confused. How many miles does your car have. I'm at 1900 and my 6MT shifts like butter, even from 1st to 2nd. Guess you're doing it wrong!

man posts like this piss me off, gives the 6MT a bad name for itself, when this is entirely the fault of the driver.

It's not the OP's fault. The 6MT is notchy and industrial on the 1-2 shift. It's definitely not a Miata or Boxster. It is what it is. I think it is likely to get better with age, but the shift quality is nowhere near perfect.

I like BMW M manual transmissions. They are not so smooth they feel sloppy yet not too notchy rough like Tremmec TKOs. The 6mt in our cars has a nice sporty feel to it the only thing I don't like is the height and slop of the shifter itself.

Not impressed with the shifter myself. I have plenty experience with manual cars and its my least favorite part of the M3. Not the worst I ever drove but certainly not the best.

Get the ZHP knob. The extra weight will help smooth it out some.

That's exactly how I would characterize it. Between a Corvette and a Boxster.
