Tired of 6MT

didn't have my daily for a month and had to daily commute with the stick M through traffic.

i really enjoy driving stick during the night when there's no one on the roads and I can open it up but!..

i'm truly over 6mt. too much work for no reason. seriously whats the point when the automatic is faster!?

please dont make this a 6mt vs dct thread we all know they're enough of those! just wanted to vent.

Ive always had a manual and when i went DCT, its like the best of both worlds. i live in SD and always hated driving in traffic.. i still let off the gas when i am up-shifting sometimes i miss the fun of a manual, but love the convenience and speed.. there are a lot of pros and cons to both sides, but i feel where youre coming from.. i know i could do the research, but is there more power loss via the drivetrain with a DCT or a manual?

My Porsche was a stick and I loved it...except when I had to go to LA, drive on the 405, or 101, or Reseda. or anywhere in traffic

hence why my DD hasn't been a stick in a while

What else are you doing??? Plus clutch is super light on the M3, so obviously you're not a 6MT kind of guy. Yes, it's more 'work' to drive a manual, but the rewards (for us) of that extra work easily outweigh all the advantages of the DCT. Since that's not the case for you (and most other drivers, so don't feel bad ), just sell it and buy a DCT. But it's going to cost you. Good luck.

Went from the TCSST (3 years) in an Evo X MR (arguably one of the best dual clutch transmissions out there) to the 6MT in my E90 and don't miss the automanual at all. Granted I don't commute much (home office) but from a driving engagement perspective, I'd much rather get it wrong 3 out of 4 times for that 1 time I get it right than have the CPU get it right 4 out of 4 times...

Just sounds like you're lazy, to be honest. Work out how much you will lose in depreciation over the course of the car's life, maybe you'd be better suited to a chauffeur / taxi? That's like the best of the best of both worlds...

I see why you would say that -- but it's somewhat infuriating how many people whine about driving stick on this forum. As I've mentioned before -- and don't think any honest 6MT owner would argue against -- there are certainly reasons to complain about the 6MT in the M3: it's notchy, occasionally grinds from 1st to 2nd, not as fast at the DCT, etc.

BUT OH MY GOD, perhaps I'm missing something, but the reason one buys a stick in the first place is the fun of manually shifting the gears... whether that is when you are going slow or when you are pulling out in front of people. The involvement (a.k.a work) is in large part what makes the transmission appealing. Sure, driving in traffic is work -- and can be quite a bit of work. But frankly, I feel that driving an automatic in traffic is at least as frustrating and way more boring. Either way, the pain that comes with shifting in traffic is, for me, easily outweighed by the joy of working the clutch and shifter, especially in a car like the M3 which is seemingly made to make that task as effortless as possible.

The closest thing I can equate these posts to is someone complaining that when they set the suspension in sport mode, the ride is too hard for comfortable daily driving!

I know the OP probably really does like stick and is just venting after a few rough days -- but I wish people would just stop using the "it's faster" argument as a reason not to go for the stick. If you are a racer, for goodness sake get the DCT and save the time, win your races, make your money. But I don't think I'm being too crazy to say that if you are spending your time on this forum, you are not a professional racer and the extra second(s) you sacrifice won't matter if you enjoy driving stick.

I'm sick of it cuz my clutch wore out and i bought a new one then the dealership told me I have to replace the flywheel too cuz they changed the clutch and it won't fit with the old flywheel. My car has 54000 km

Technology makes us lazy and fat (two things that do not go well with sporty... lol)... 20 ago there where no sport cars with automatic transmission... hell even F1 had stick... I can still remember in car videos of Senna driving that Lotus and Maclaren, moving that steering wheel and working that stick... glorious I tell you... Glorious

I definitely agree with you that the involvement of a manual transmission is where it's at. Learning to rev-match and bang off a well-executed heel-toe downshift is very satisfying and is part of what separates us from 99.9% of the driving public. That's why my previous 330ci and 545i were manuals. I had a lot of fun trying to learn those skills. With my last car, the M5, I agonized for a year whether to get the SMG or the unique-to-the-US-market manual transmission. I really wanted the involvement of the manual and was worried that I'd be "wimping out" getting the SMG, but in the end I knew that I wanted the M5 and no other four-door performance sedan, and the M5/V10 combo was designed around the SMG. The 6-speed manual was a band-aid tack-on to satisfy the US market, and in the end wasn't very well suited to the car. So I think I made the right decision.

The DCT in the M3 is far superior to the old SMG. Much smoother/less jerky at low speeds, and practically instantaneous in shifting when driving hard.

And people shouldn't assume that DCT drivers choose this transmission for its automatic convenience. I NEVER drive my DCT in auto mode. Even around town and on the daily commute. My reason for choosing the DCT this time didn't have to do with the engineering of the vehicle, because the M3/V8 was built around both manual and DCT options, but rather because I knew I wanted to track this car. Right now I'm still a beginner, and while I've done a few HPDEs, I need to concentrate on being consistent with the line, keeping my eyes up, learning proper threshold and trail braking, being smooth, etc. For me I think it's too much to throw perfect heel-toe downshifts into the mix. In a few years when I've advanced, I'll probably choose a manual transmission to start working on that part of the art. Just too many stories of novices botching a downshift, accidentally doing a 5th to 2nd and mechanically over revving. I recently heard about a brand new WRX STi that did this at a track day and blew both engine and transmission...

But then again (see other post in this section), Snooki drives a manual M3, probably with heels on to make her 5'2" instead of 4'10".

That is INSANE. It looks like the video has been sped up. I can't imagine reacting that fast. It must become largely muscle memory.
