Smile UWO Formula SAE Racing Team Looking For Sponsorship

Hey Guys,

As some of you may know I am part of the University of Western Ontario Formula Racing Team. UWO Formula Racing is a team of undergraduate students that designs and builds a formula style race car, and then goes on to compete at a series of international races held by the Society of Automotive Engineers. At these events UWO Formula Racing faces off against some of the top engineering schools from around the world. As a student run, non-profit organization UWO Formula Racing relies completely on corporate sponsorship and fundraising in order to ensure the teams success. There are many benefits to sponsoring UWO Formula Racing, which are outlined in the sponsorship package attached. If you want, please take some time to review the package.

Any bits would help, even from a non-financial perspective: shipping, parts, we are looking into sponsorship in building a Ti exhaust, etc.

The car is pretty cool, probably as an enthusiast you're interested in some of the stats: 0-60mph under 3.4 seconds (untested this year yet: probably with some help will hit 3.2 sec), 1.5 G on skid pad, 4-Spd SMG style gearbox, much of it is CF construction. I can probably* arrange for you to be able to drive it and some cool benchmark testing against it too. We go to the biggest Formula SAE competition in the world so there are definitely some benefits in sponsoring. Thanks for your time and consideration everyone!

EDIT: Can a mod please move this to 'non-BMW' Automotive section please? Sorry, should have thought of that before posting!

Holy Crap! As amazing as that is I still find it crazy that people just stand along the road waiting to get hit by an out of control racing car.

The Formula SAE and SAE Mini-Baja competitions are excellent. They provide interested engineering students the opportunity to practically apply their technical training while learning teamwork, project management, and fabrication skills. If you have a child who is interested in engineering and automotive, a university with a top level Formula SAE or SAE Mini-Baja team can be an excellent choice.

lol we don't really gear the car to race that fast. Also, in the autocross & small track racing we don't have the car safety rated nor wind tunnel tested for downforce at those speeds so I, as the driver would not feel comfortable with pulls that start @ 70-100mph lol.

I would not like to make this into a M3/M5 vs. FSAE thread just because one is a street car and the other is a Formula race-car; that comparison would truly be 'APPLES' and 'ORANGES'.

I will say this however:

We have a 20mm restrictor so this year I believe we'll be tuning about 90 horsepower out of our 600CC engine. The weight of our car will be about 420 pounds.

90 bhp/420 lb. = 0.214 hp/lb.

The M5 is a masterful car, but it is laden with street car weight.

507 bhp/4090 lb. = 0.124 hp/lb.

Any way we shake it, it cannot be compared fairly. The only reason the video was made was to illustrate how these numbers translated into the 'real world'.

Exactly. The films show that the the cars are not toys.

Anyone that wants to know more about Formula SAE and the excellent training oportunity the program provides to engineering students, here is a link to the Formula SAE web pages at the University of Texas at Arlington (http://fsae.uta.edu/). UTA has been a very successful in the Formula SAE competitions over the years. The picture below shows almost all their cars from 1984 - 2008.
