Not sure yet, waiting for the shop to tear it down. And go from there, but these are the things I will be replacing.

Engine mounts
Transmission mount
Radiator hose
Coilpacks
Rod bearings
Valve cover gasket
Oil pan gasket
Piston rings (idk, we'll see, but most likely)
Possible a few sensors, depends

Some of my friends think I should keep it a stock rebuild, others want me to do a stroker. Not sure if im financially ready to do a stroker lol, but it has my curiosity.

But in short, a refresh on the motor is for sure. Not eta on anything, but will update on the progress when things are moving.

Why piston rings? Is the motor showing significant signs of wear?

That's why I said maybe. But if we end up tearing it down, might as well. Engine with 235k+ miles, it would seem like a good idea to anyways. I haven't done a compression check, but I'll leave it to the shop to break it down and suggest.

Not trying to push you to spend more money but at that mileage it would be a crime to not change the main crank bearings also. That is the next failure point of this engine behind the rod bearings.

I know King Bearings sells main bearings for the S85 V10. I assume it's the same bearing you need minus a few for the V8 motor instead.

What is the mileage that most have changed belts and pulleys at? I haven't seen much of those mentioned on this thread. I'm at 74k and now preparing for a good preventative maintenance project. I've done the rod bearings, TA's and fuel tank breather valve.

Main bearings are probably the most important thing to do with an engine-out service. So many RB failures are just mains failures where a spun main starved an RB of oil.

How much is a RB job in Toronto, and did you use any fancy aftermarket bearings? I'm at 92000KM and haven't done them yet. My friend who is a master mechanic at bmw is saying don't worry about it.

I'm sorry to inform you.. but your friend is not knowledgeable at all of this this engine if his response to rod bearings is "don't worry about it"... I wouldn't let him within ten feet of my car.

Dealerships typically mostly deal with cars under warranty. Your friend likely hasn't seen many because customers don't want to pay dealer rates. My nephew is also a master tech, and is now a service manager. He mentioned rarely seeing bear issues on the S65. However, I still changed mine. I'm glad I did as there was clear wear.

Agreed. I would assume it's probably due to him being trained by BMW so he buys into the whole "aluminum bearings completely fixed the problem" bs

I changed my belts around 100-110k (can't remember exactly) and the belts had no cracks/dry rotting and were barely able to be differentiated from the new belts. It's a cheap repair though, so no reason not to do it as preventative insurance. I should probably consider replacing my pulleys at some point too.

Something I found out that was MORE IMPORTANT during my belt change was that the radiator hoses needed replacement. To take the belts off, you need to take the radiator fan out and it is an EXTREMELY tight fight up against some of the radiator hoses. Well it turns out that the plastic ends of the hoses had become very brittle due to excessive heat and sheared off while removing the fan.

Here's my experience/DIY guide:

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1382244

Since then I also ran into the exact same issue with the small thin hose that runs from the expansion tank to the thermostat housing. So my advice would be to go ahead and replace both of those hoses. And, as mentioned in the DIY, put a "worm screw" style band on the big radiator hose so if you need to take your fan out again for some reason, you can easily just disconnect that hose.

Getting a 'new to me' driveshaft installed Friday by my Indy. I got one with 25K miles for decently cheap on here.... Anyone have a decently accurate cost estimate for the labor to have it changed?

See if Carmines, Eurobahn, or SRI Racing will give you a quote over the phone.

Just wanted to update. Car is currently at 238k miles. I no longer own the car, but a close friend now has the car. Daily driven.

Engine mounts (Replaced)
Transmission mount (Replaced)
Radiator hose (Replaced)
Coilpacks (Not replaced yet)
Rod bearings (Replaced @ 235k~ miles, performed at Precision Dynamics Motorsport)
Valve cover gasket (Done, also coated the valve cover)
Oil pan gasket (Done)
Piston rings (Compression still good)
Possible a few sensors, depends (No sensors replaced yet)

My friend and I are working on swapping the oil filter housing gasket, as it's leaking.

Overall, car is still solid, will need to swap out suspension, as the shocks are giving out, but coilovers will prob be installed.

Nice to have the car passed over to a friend. Curious to hear about the 235k miles rod shells?

I got my 08 E93 recently with 66k miles. At 69k miles now. So far, did 2 oil changes, 6MT trans flush, diff flush, spark plugs, brake fluid, front and rear pads with ds2500. I’m a service advisor at BMW and had my technician inspect the vehicle. It’s solid as far as we can see.
