After Market Intakes (drop-in) and MPG?

Hello Guys...

So basically what I want to know is there any increase in the MPGs by doing a drop in intake swap? Guys with aftermarket intakes please chime in and tell us your experience...

There really is no aftermarket intake other than the Gruppe M at this time. The stock airbox really cannot be improved on other than a performance filter like the Macht Schnell unit.

Yes I know and thats exactly what I am asking... for example in the Macht Schenell Drop in replacement filter... will there be a MPG increase... like normally there is with less restrictive air filters?

I haven't noticed anything. MPG still the same with 70/30 highway.

Very little, there is a dyno proven 6-8hp gain from users on the forums.

MPG should remain about the same, depending on driving habits.

Because the sound of the engine sucking in air will be so much more seductive with the drop in filter, you'll be driving it harder trying to reproduce that sound every chance you get. Therefore, your MPG will go down.

In most cars the stock air filter provides all the air the engine needs, making those 'race' filters a moot point IMO. One thing you get a lot more of than stock with race filters is DIRT (no free lunch: more air means more dirt. But that's more air your engine does not need).

And even if the stock air filter was restrictive, that'd be at the very top of the rpm, wtin zero mpg benefit in normal driving. Save your pennies for something more effective. Good day.

M3post member Poppin Fresh and Major Kusanagi both saw about a 1.5-2.0 mpg increase after using the Ape filter.

This doesn't take into effect the embedded charcoal liner in the stock element which is used for emissions.

I suggest Popping Fresh redo the test. No way the air filter alone is increasing the MPG that much.

I agree, especially when it seems like most others don't get any appreciable increase in MPG.

Perhaps the increased MPG noted by some is due to switching from a DIRTY stock filter to a CLEAN aftermarket filter, hence providing more airflow...

It could have been from the latest ECU update from BMW. I am getting better gas mileage after my last update at BMW. Am not sure about others but since I last got my ECU update I have found that my car is getting better gas mileage.

Ladies....it's not a drastic improvement at all. I went from a measly 14.8 mpg to a whopping 16 mpg. I have about 2500 miles in my car since I checked this afternoon. My driving is a mix of highway and city. It does sound cool to hear the induction though so sometimes it drop's to a 15 mpg. LoL! But I never got the car with mileage in mind and I'm sure there's enough Prius owners in NJ to offset my carbon footprint. Just enjoy the ride people. Life's too short to count the gallons.

You should add that into the "Stupid Question People Ask About Your M3" thread: Q: "How many miles do you get into a gallon?" A: How the F#$% do I know! It's an ///M3!"

PS. The car was purchased in April and it has all the new updates in software for the DCT.

If I did a mod that increased my MPG by 1.0 average almost all the time I'd say that's a huge benefit. +1mpg on this car is like +5mpg on a Civic

JC, you'd probably be happy with the AA filter. It retains stock-like filtration, but ditches the carbon filter in the OE element
