350z vs e92 m3 buttdyno
Hi guys, this is my first post and hopefully not the last.
I have been driving a 350z roadster 2005 with the 280 hp engine that revs to 6600 rpm, and I now want to move to something a bit more refined and special. My first car was a 1999 320Ci with 200000 KM on the clock and still going strong (interior and exterior), so I know how much effort Bmw puts in their cars. I want to get a e92 m3 but I have so many questions after test driving one today. It felt very similar and very different at the same time than my 350z: 1-Engine: Both naturally aspirated beasts but that sound coming from the v8 is intoxicating 2-Interrior: much better on the e92 3-styling: I like both but the e92 takes it by far and also by being newer in design 4-practicality: the e92 m3 takes it again. and since I live in Morocco and the roads here are nowhere near perfect its nice to have EDC and multiple options to choose from Including the glorious DCT for stop and go traffic. However I still have this lingering doubt in my mind that for the price they go for now its not worth the upgrade as when I floored it at 3500 rpm up to 6000, I didn't get that satisfaction as the owner didn't let me go past 6000. So my question is since they are both naturally aspirated heavy cars, and im already used to revving the s*** out of the engine to get that satisfaction, is it much better in the e92 m3 ? or acceleration is going to feel very similar for anyone that drove both ? I know that gearing is very different when it comes to the M3 and it kind of makes up a little for the lack of torque. But if I go to 4500 rpm and floor it to 8300, will I get that "OH SH** factor" ? Thanks in advance for your inputs. |

My previous car, like you, was also a 2005 350Z roadster (non HR) and trust me the difference is night and day. The roadster was a quick little nibble car, with nice and predictable acceleration. I used to have 2010 camaro SS before the roadster so I know v8 power, but the M3 scared me until I got used to it. In the M3 I'll look down and think 'wtf I'm going to get myself arrested!' And 4000-8000 RPM is when that happens. Another astonishing feeling is how fast you can get from 60-100 mph on the freeway. There's no comparison between this and the roadster. It's a true pleasure to drive in terms of power, looks, practically, and interior quality.

Thank you for your insights, I can definitely relate to every piece of the interrior rattling. I was going once at about 140 km on the highway and the top opened very brutally. I remember it felt like the doors of a plane blew off, even if I never experienced it. *knock on wood*

Let me give you a comparison of speed. The other day I was in my DD, a stage 1 535xi wagon. There was a riced out and decatted 350z weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, etc. I end up at the front of a light next him, and decided to mess with him for being such a dick. My fatty wagon completely blew the doors off him, even at speed. He then proceeded to try and race a Chrysler 200, which was just as fast as him...
Comparing my bone stock E92 to my tuned wagon, my E92 completely mops the floor with it in acceleration and handling. Though an auto, AWD and turbo torque makes the wagon really quick on city streets. |

They probably make similar power under 6K.
6-8.5K is where the magic happens. Find a different seller if he wont let you have a proper test drive (if you are a serious buyer). |

Yea I have the same feeling after 4000 you really start to feel it and at 6000 and above the car is just a different animal.
That being said some people dont like that, that is why the turbo's are so popular (that and fuel economy) you can start having fun around 1500. I think getting any E9X M3 you have to think about your speed priorities, this is not a car that is going to throw you in the back seat off the line. My 750i does that but my M3 doesnt. But my M3 is just so satisfying screaming past 6000 and on boil and I love the directness of it.

I'd go with it in a heart beat, my bro had a 370 and my M3 is obvious better in terms of driving engagement. The sound alone is enough for me, the Z sounds like chewbecca when you put an exhaust on it.

The previous owner of my car made sure I took it up the RPM.

Well the s65 engine doesn't really make it's power outside of 5000-8300rpm so that's not really a good performance driving test. When you want to drive it hard that's where you want it to be, though peak torque is at 3900.
However it revs fast so in first or second gear it's going to get into the power quick if you floor it. I don't really get the oh shit feeling though from butt dyno. When I floor it at 4k to 8400 I get an initial rush of torque and then it feels almost like I'm not accelerating but the speedometer tells a different story as the car accelerates quickly as the car revs to 8400. You get going fast in a hurry. The excitement to me is more in the engine noise and how quickly it revs to 8400, which in 3rd great quickly takes me to illegal speeds on the street. My m2 which is a turbo feels like it pulls harder but then runs out of power once you get to 6k on it's way to 7k redline. The e9X m3 pulls all the way to 8300. The more you rev it, the more it rewards you. The real down side to me is the car takes a while to properly warm up, which means you'll be waiting a bit before you get into the power band. At least it's warm in Morocco though, so that helps. |

My prior car was a 2004 G35 coupe with basically the same VQ35 motor, and it's a big difference to the E92 M3. We're talking about 1-1.5 seconds difference in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, which can definitely be felt in real world driving. And, yes, most of the rush and push in the back comes in above 4500RPM. Where the car really shines is on the track. So balanced, so capable, and so good.
Obvioulsy the refinement, luxury and comfort make this a much more sophisticated platform than the 350z.

VQ to an S65 is no comparison completely different leagues. I driven a G35 and 350z in the past and those felt like a boat compared to the M3, it wasn't even as agile as a stock 328i.

My first car when I was about 17 was a brand new 2016 6MT G35 coupe. I cringe thinking back that I actually owned that car and thought it was 'cool'... I sold it my sophomore year in college thank god, but I put about 50K or miles on it over those years. I've had the e90 M3 for over a year now, and it's not even in the same universe.. literally it's not even close. Tremendously faster, but also better in every single other aspect. styling, sound, acceleration, handling, thrill, etc. I wouldn't judge your experience based on a test drive. There is no telling what shape a car is in when the owner is stupid enough to not let you take it over 6K RPM. I'd just decide to switch and then find the best shape E9x you can find in your range, probably best to find one on here from an enthusiast, and buy it.

Go drive another one, make sure you are the only one in the car, let it warm up and then open it up 1-2-3rd all the way to 8500. Then come back, read your original post and answer your own questions.
Welcome!

When I test drove my car I didn't give the guy selling it a choice. He was in the passenger seat, I was in the driver seat.
Car saw a redline on gears 2, 3, and 4. I don't care if it bothered him, he could use the $26,450 cashiers check I handed him to wipe his tears.

If you didn't try 1-2-3 gears WOT all the way to redline, you haven't really test driven the car.
Every time someone tells me the car lacks torque it's cos they're accelerating in the wrong gear (too low rpms). |

OP, your test drive was:
".... but I didn't inhale" if you liked all the other aspects of the car, get it, the upper rev range will be a nice surprise for you. As other have said, you really need to feel that upper RPM surge, if I was selling mine I would insist that the potential buyer nail it at 4k coming out of a turn with MDM on in second. |

First time I drove an E92 M3, I thought I was supposed to shift based on the pitch of the engine, I looked down at the tach and realized I had 2400 to go, and was astonished by how good the car was above 6k specifically. It's good from 4000-6000, but it's incredible from 6 to redline. OP, at least you know the former owner was driving the car like a baby and it'll be in good condition. holding 4k steady then flooring it in second is my go-to move to show passengers interested in the car. The jerk and immediacy of it beats some 500-600hp cars I've been in. |
