What kind of harm if oil level is too high?
I just came back from my getting my oil change done at my local shop and according to the idrive, it says the oil level is too high. I called and they said said to let it settle a bit and see what happens.
I've been digging the forums and I called a few dealerships to ask and I've gotten some conflicting responses. Should I be concerned if the oil level remains too high after a day or two? |

Well if the shop either over filled the car in the first place I wouldn’t take their advice. Also since the car only reads oil lever after the oil has warmed up a bit there would be nothing left to “settle”. Just drain a little to be safe, why waste time figuring out what the risk is

OP seems like you're on the island. There are tons of reputable shops to choose from. I would go back and have them drain some out. By the dumb response of the shop, I would look elsewhere.

Is it possible that the sensor isn't accurate? Should I just ignore it? Has anyone else encountered this before? |

My worry would be they are not draining BOTH drains. The guy who had 14 qts was a case of this where the shop only drained the main sump and did not drain the front sump and added 8-9L. Making way overfilled...

I would just do this because going back to a shop that overfills it twice in a row seems like they don't know what they are doing. Accept it , do it yourself, and just move on and take your car somewhere reputable next time. |

Also want to mention I drove about 40 miles in this status and didn't have an issue. Not the wisest thing but of course this depends if you're a bit over like I was or at 14 liters.

To answer your original question and title of the thread. If the oil level is high enough the spinning crank shaft will smack the oil causing foam to form. Your oil pickup tube/pump picks up this foam(which is a mixture of air and oil) causing your oil pressure to drop, which in turn starves vital components of the necessary oil they need.

Reviving an old thread.
So after I did the RB swap, the oil level showed below Minimum. I panicked and added about half quart and I called my mechanic who did the job and he mentioned he added about 9.5 quarts. Anyways I waited for a while after I added the half quart and the reading said oil at min level, add one quart. I drove around like this for about 25 miles hoping it would reset but no, so I added another half quart. Now the fucking thing is telling me engine oil too high. I am at work and need to drive about 30 miles to get home where I can drain some of the oil. Is it ok to drive the 30 miles with this warning? No one should have to go through this stress/pressure to know if your car has the right amount of oil…Fuck BMW for this . |
