Hey everyone,

Anyone know if there is a tool for separating the driveshaft halves? I know there is a bolt & washer but once that's off is there a separation tool so I don't have to bang on things?

Update:I just used a 3 jaw puller.

Make sure to mark the orientation before removing. the drive shaft is balanced as a pair. I would just use a soft blow hammer or a block of wood and rotate it and tap it.

Nah use a mallet and tap it apart. It’s just in splines you’re not causing any damage.

Should be able to pull it apart by hand.

I would avoid banging on it unless you have to.
Also use the puller on the csb, don't burn or hammer it off. No need to.

So far any videos I've seen require banging on it after the joining bolt is removed. My car is really clean underneath so there is no corrosion or rust but I don't want to bang on anything. Wonder if I leave the rear end bolted and only drop the guibo and center bearing if I can yank it out?

At this point, just drop the entire shaft and fix it on a bench.

Brass hammers are nice.

Honestly I don't want to even mess with the constant velocity joint. There are many colored replacement bolts and I don't quite understand the differences. I'd rather leave it attached at the diff, mark & separate the drive shaft. I was hoping that someone would tell me that I could use a separator of some sort to pull them nicely apart. I don't mind buying tools I may only use 2-3 times.

If you plan on reusing the bolts, you can mark them with nail polish or something like that. Will help them going back in the same location.

Would replace any hardware there with new myself if taking apart.

Yeah I'm not touching them. I bought all new hardware for the guibo (trans) side. I guess I'm just using a rubber mallet and vise clamps to separate things? I'll just put a rag in between the clamps & shaft and bang away.

Mine came off by hand at 166k miles. I feel you'll do more damage to the Diff end joint if you're tugging on it. Careful there. I would just remove from the diff as well.

If you're not replacing the CV joint in the middle, why are you pulling it apart? Maybe CSB?

Yes the CSB and other stuff in the area. Everything is very clean underneath and folks are saying it separates pretty easy so I think I'll still just leave things connected at the diff.

Gotcha. Go easy on the diff end CV, they pop out pretty easily. Also, loosen up the center 18mm bolt with the driveshaft still attached to everything and vehicle in park or parking brake on, makes your life a heck of a lot easier

Feel free to listen to any hack job creating a video on YouTube.

There are even some so call professional shops that do questionable things. I spent less time doing it the right way than those clowns in the video burning and hammering on it.

I lived in Canada for 30yrs. I know the challenge with rust really well. The car the DS above was from VA and had a little under body rust, wasn't a FL car.

But I don't think that is the issue here, they were burning out the rubber to pull the housing and rubber part off, not to expand the bearing race to remove easily. They never tried to or mentioned using a puller.

Got all the parts and started getting into it. Trans mounts are in the area so I'm doing these too and look what I found. New bushings installed in support, old ones above. Check out drivers side bushing!

Wow, I swapped in new transmission mounts and the old ones looked basically new at 90k. Curious why yours are in such bad shape.

246,000 miles lol. 2nd owner @ 25,000 miles and I use the shit out of this car. I always loved NA V8's so when I could afford to I got an M3. I maintain things meticulously so I have no problems ragging it out daily. Lol my behavior prompts a lot of my car issues like bushings that look poopy.
